Was sleepily doing PBL last night when someone knocked on my door, and, presuming it was my sister, I said "come in", only for the door to creak open and the person outside to say "aiyo, so messy!". At which I jumped out of my chair, bolted for my door and beheld ChiaHui regarding my room (which looked like a bomb had hit it) disapprovingly heh... Hey if I HAD slept after coming back, my bed wouldn't have had so much stuff strewn all over...

Anat Group Day! yesterday was...

Started the day with Daniel and I noting that we were wearing the same outfit, being relieved that we had different ties, and Arshvin walked in ALSO wearing black and white and both of us laughed ourselves silly...

Sighh... It was so memorable. Yesterday Prof Bay was really on form man! Read Daniel's blog for all the funny details... I think one of the things which we liked bout Prof Bay was the way he took time to know all of us by name and all, how he would share his own anecdotes with us... And of course, when on the first minute of the first day, it was evident I was arrowable, well, that was It...

By the end of Trunk, indeed, by the end of the day, I could imagine our prof, who I once thought was very proper, to be the crazy KEVIIan like many of my friends and family members are or were...

All it took was for Jade to suggest an informal picture, Arshvin to suggest a per rectal examination, Prof Bay to agree vigorously, and Daniel to complete a highly compromising picture (which I don't have at the moment =D)

Think through this set of tuitorials our group became closer, since we were interacting more, laughing together (usually at the same few people), and we started to dare to speak up, ask questions and answer without being scared of being wrong (which I was most of the time)...

Thanks Prof Bay =) We'll miss your tuitorials!

Early clinicals was a bit of an anti-climax (it was more than because the fishballs in the canteen were absolutely tasteless, as Kok Pun would confirm), but it was a change of environment, so it wasn't too bad. And we took somemore pictures...

And I need to learn Cantonese from Louis!

Well, at this stage, I've been wondering what I'll feel next week. Once the papers are over I probably won't be worrying too much, but dunno lar see how... Must go to Queensway soon to get another pair of keeper gloves for soccer. Handball has already worn my present pair out, but then diving on the MPC will cause that...

My sleep cycle has absolutely gone. Am now sleeping about 4 hours at night and another 3 in the day... Two naps instead of one nice long sleep.

Somehow, in OCS when LTA Jason told us before Platoon Field Camp, "Well, gentlemen, this is going to be one hell of a week", I felt much less demoralized than during the exam briefing today.

In fact my platoon even laughed about it during camp prep that night, even though our rooms were covered with tubes of stuff, maps, magazines, entrenching tools and mountains of ziplocs and we were wondering how to fit everything on our persons.

Sigh, I wonder how people actually get through exams when I'm not retaining everything...

On a happier note, here's my new handball jersey.. Can't wait for CAs to be over and training will resume (I bet I'm going to regret saying this)

All my friends are graduating / graduated from Command School =)

Wei Quan became spec at the end of last month, and Wei Lun just finished ASLC. The lucky lucky fellow =Pp posted back to BMT, and, lest I forget, never had the experience of being a first aider in a SJ triage haha...

Maurice, Kenny, Eric, Bryan and the rest have returned to OCS where they'll march for the next three weeks, then it'll be graduation, over the RJ invites.

Yesterday after dinner, Moses and I had a brief conversation on the dubious values of stuff like commissioning ball, social night and anything else which involves the bringing of a date heh, which was quite funny...

And I've been discovering that a number of people think I never went to army AT ALL because of Medicine. Shame on thou ignoramuses!

Every St. John farewell brings back specific memories of that particular batch, whether it was guiding them (this case talking bout juniors) through some particularly painful tekan session, a game, a talk or whatever. Squad 1'04, or Squad 4 '07, has their own special place.

The memorable first day, where I wound up next to Wong Li Ting, Wei lun and I were bugging Wei Quan to tell us who his cousin was.

Vanessa and XuanMing remarking that at least 4 nursings looked almost identical on their PD forms (I can't remember who the four are already)

Welcome party where I sat next to Sihan and tried to make him feel at ease (hey, no mean feat when you're supposed to be the second most fierce person in the division haha)

PE, when Crystal and Luhuan would run past me

Clarice and Yeo LiTing at Lavender MRT

Jacinthia, Wen Bin (who joined St. John on a dark and stormy afternoon) and Sabrina whom I got to know during HP, and it was with the latter and Adeline whom I walked the torturous 3 km back from ECP from to Kembangan MRT

James and team whom I had the honour to train last year, and it was also through them that my interest in medicine was piqued further.

The batch which cheered me up during O-levels by talking to me online (and my parents wonder how I got into VJ while taking my O-levels in the midst of severe St. John withdrawal symptoms)

The group of people whom I can still remember, probably more than the average member, as their nervous sec 1 selves, softly uttering their names during the intro of the first day, the ones whom XuanMing, Vanessa and I were struggling to look out for during our promotion to Corporal.

I still have the video clip of their "Upside Down" dance during my farewell somewhere around.. The excitement and sheer enjoyment combined with an overwhelming sense of emptiness at the close of our journey as members of the active division. I think it was one of the closest Sec. 1 - Sec. 4 relationships any two squads could have.

And so now, they who were once inexperienced and needing guidance carved their way through their 4 years, as cadets, as NCOs, as competitors, as instructors, as public first aiders, and having sent off 3 prior batches, finally got their own farewell, amid the performances, gifts and wishes.

That ends my annual post dedicated to the graduating squad. To me, they'll always be the Squad 1s of the division I once had the pleasure of commanding, but a bunch who have grown up so much since then =)

WELL today was certainly an interesting day!

Started with a reveille at 6.30 am, a migration to KE7 to pick up my laptop n stuff, a heavy bout of exercise when I realised I forgot to bring my labcoat down, and culminating with a veryveryvery memorable tutorial with Prof Bay (see Daniel's blog for the full gory details).

The following conversation took place in the histo lab between Walter and Shaun

Walter: So did Jonathan get scr3wed by Prof Bay today?
Shaun: Well, very nearly literally, yes

And the thing he slapped was my right iliac crest, not any other thing! But as Daniel said, its a classic. My reputation with my anat group is now very enhanced. Much to their entertainment may I add. And my new jacket got dirty!

And to wind down the day, we just celebrated Edwin's birthday, and the Lakota people went for supper hoho...

Farewell was yesterday, one of the better ones I've seen in 7 years =) Yiyang has passed over the senior comm to me for now, so yesterday I had to make "inspiring" speeches on the spot to jio the new seniors. But for now, guess priority is mock comp. There's no such thing as persuading them to come. Either their heart is in it or it is not.

And whether it is or not does not detract from whatever friendship we may have either =) I have plenty of good friends from St. John who do not come back regularly, but they have equally important committments outside, which we of the regular comm respect. Am not sure myself how much I can commit what with IHG training n all, but as long as I can do my job I'll be happy.

Well, the Highness of Monday has worn a little thin, its back to the normal routine of trying to keep awake especially in my room (I don't want to go near the study room already). Still, FM tomorrow (yes, I'm still fencing, if only to break the monotony. It clears my head and lets me destress) and etc. Nothing makes one feel good like a valid close quarter hit =D

The Highest day ever. More High than when I handover-ed in SJ, more High than POP. Well, maybe not as high as those crazy VJ excursions to Suntec but oh well...

Today, the side of me that perversely wants to prove that I'm still worthy of being an OCT, a St. John SNCO, and wants to be justified in teasing Bingyi for being an Air Force cadet manifested... I can't believe I'm so.... morbid.

Started the day with doing 20 pushups, 20 sit ups and 1 min of holding a 45 deg angle with my free lower limb (Where did I get that from? Must have been some sadistic St. John senior). Was contemplating doing the whole 5 BX but decided that alternate leg raisers were kinda redundant.

But after spending a whole 20 minutes in the toilet washing up, and hard-heartedly using cold water, I felt very high.

In fact, I was quite high throughout the day. Stayed awake during all the lectures except part of the sports physio one, where most people were stoning. But the bit about the 3 systems, and how to train them was quite interesting. Awake for that bit. I don't think my alertness was all because I was making sure to keep my pen nib away from my new jacket.

That said, at least 5 of us were wearing it already =)..

Then came TBL, which was much more efficient and now the whole batch knows my voice cos I kena sabo again =/ Apprently quite a lot of KEVIIs answered for their groups... Well, even though I was high I still had common sense! Obviously our digestive systems were working since none of us were feeling queasy... This and my green shirt are going to endear or "endear" me to a lot of people...

And to round of the day, I was still very high through dinner and decided to go and run, which I just came back from. Ran the A1 route, which according to Google Earth is 4.75 km. Finished it in 28 minutes, which is like 5 minutes off the pace for OCS. But I think that was entirely the fault of

a) the slope outside central library and
b) the slope outside NUH

and now I could hardly wobble down the stairs to my room. I'm such a wimp. Die after 4.75 km, when my sister's happily running 35 km!!! But that said, I can still do 14 m shuttle runs in 3 layers of clothes =D

Alright shall probably bathe then do my tuitorial till I sleep =) auf wiedersehen!

Forgot to add in:

8. Going to NUH for Rotaract Club CIP. Had an encounter with three quite friendly patients, Ami and a squirt bottle of alcohol =) Luckily didn't irritate anyone... Psychaitric and Neurologic problems look quite depressing...

9. Got my KE jacket at last!! Though its not really anatomically proportional, but it'll do! Can go wash my grey one alr...

And finally, had a guitar lesson before Youth Group yesterday... haha... I can so not imagine myself playing a guitar actually... It felt quite weird carrying one home (even more so that I'm used to people staring at me carrying all my fencing stuff, what less a guitar) heh... But will try and put in practise..

2 weeks to CA...

The interesting bits of the past three days were as follows:

1. Playing badminton with Celest Yukit and Shawn, my BMT roommates and Alfred's buddy...

1a. Discovering that Shawn subconsciuosly thinks my name is Jeremy! Goodness knows why! But where he was quite normally called me "Jonathan" during normal conversation, he suddenly began yelling at "Jeremy" in the middle of the match... Its quite freaky haha... Aiyo!! Shawn arh, help you clean toilet for 9 weeks in BMT and you can't remember my name tskkkk

2. Running into Gerry at Science bus stop

3. Daniel identifying a uterus in a male cadaver.

4. Telling ChiaHui and Ami that the pelvic diaphragm was made of the "Erector pili" instead of "Levator ani" (Come on, be charitable, it sounds the same!). Both laughed so hard that ChiaHui turned red... "Imagine having the mao2 gu3 song3 ran2 feeling in your backside" heh...

5. PROF LING!!! See Daniel's blog for details

6. Ran into Evelyn Lau, my squad 1 IC when I was a tinyyy sec 1 cadet at the Science bus stop! Apparently I haven't changed still sec. 1 so I was still recognizable (or she has a deep impression forevermore of the cadet who walked into a pillar in front of her). Heh we talked a while, bout how I was a "figure from her distant past", how Peng Siang lived three doors from me, bout Edwin, my OGL and her classmate, Jiayan and I in medicine, Joanne and Stacy in Pharmacy, etcetc... She still remembers all of us! Haha...

7. Getting a lot of nice songs from Elli last night

Well that's about it now... Quite a mundance post, but still I have nothing to do at the moment... Bar of course, Moore, Guyton, and a whole thick green file of Biochem...

I wore my infamous Lime Green Shirt to school yesterday on Jason's suggestion that yesterday be "Lakota Day". When I saw Squad 3 '04's squad shirt, I thought that was bright enough,

well,

Mine is WORST =Pp

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
A shirt that reflects the light (at somerset with Yueyen during Amazing Race, Medicamp Day 1), glows in the dark, colours neighbouring people green if they're wearing a light colour, causes cars to accelerate at you and which Alfred described as "looking as though you highlighted your shirt"

Anyway, of the responses I got (it continues to impress my OG =Pp but it was the first time the KEVIIan people had seen it), were the following

1. Michael: stared and stared and couldn't stop staring like he'd been hypnotized

2. Celeste: Squinted at said "so bright!"

3. Melvin Tan: said "wah!"

4. Shaun Chan: said "going for CWO arh?"

5. My PBL tutor: arrowed me to start the PBL cos "I was giving off vibes that I was ready"

and the ultimate

5. Woon Li, the RJ epeeist: said that when I entered the LT she had to avert her eyes such was the glare, and even then saw a bright patch on green for a few moments after that =Pp

man. Attention seekers needn't make lots of noise or what... they just have to wear bright bright green shirts.. So many people in science canteen were glancing at me out of the corner of their eyes...

Anyway just came back from fencing in FM. Had my third private lesson. Coach told me (and it makes sense) that another reason why right-handers find it hard to fence lefties is that it's also physically more tiring, cos your parries now are using your underused supinator muscles rather than your honed pronators, since lefties usually attack to the outside. Still, pretty fun, and I got to fence Coach at the end haha... And I so died whenever it came to parry riposte duels with him =Pp

Also practised inside flicks against the dummy placed in a left-handed stance. My flicks to the front are pretty much reliable, but still cannot really get the ranging right... Like that day I was hitting Jason all over his electric jacket, when I should have been only concentrating on under his left arm.

Anyway, two weeks to CA, and my friends from OCS are commissioning soon.. Mixed feelings for them, though its nice that Maurice is back from Thailand, and it was fun catching up with Kenny online again (his job is so cooL!)... I guess there's nothing like going through the whole course?

Though Yen Chin told me that it would have been just impractical to not defer (especially since my job was nothing spectacular), but I still feel kinda guilty for doing so, especially when older people (especially some of the aunties etc) start saying how "lucky you are", as though you never did dig your trench, though they're right that I didn't go to Brunei =( Guess it's kinda like the first time I didn't complete something which everyone else is... unlike St. John, or Chinese.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
The conversation with Daniel Hap, Tango 2309 summed up our feelings about OCS... I wouldn't want to live through that again, especially not the despondency of the first day, but still, it was a great experience...

The incident of Kenny and The Thunderflash, by the way, is one of the top three funniest incidents which our section got into =Pp

Oh well, I guess 1 am in the morning is not the best of times to do soul-searching... Shall stop for now...

Friday, November 09, 2007

Pretty fun day =) Stress reliever having a break... Not sure whether this is what many people did, but I spent the holiday having just that =Pp except for studying a short while in the afternoon with Melvin and Ami (which towards the end degenerated into a talk-rooster session, partially my fault sorry).

Deepavali included the first M1 supper (thanks Melvin for initiating and calling me down) at PGP which was quite fun... And learned to play pool from Buddima (or however his name is spelled), who traumatised me in handball last week =Pp discovered also that for a teenager going young adult of this generation, my taste in songs is quite unorthodox, songs which can change the feng shui of the mahjong table heehee

Caught up a lot of sleep, and thanks Amanda-across-my-window for waking me up for lunch... Fencing training today was cancelled at the last minute... Will book lesson with Coach next tuesday =) I wonder when I will find time to learn to drive. Nothing at the moment can beat the sheer joy of poking other people, though I regularly get thrashed by the more experienced ones...

And handball rocked today! Dunno whether the standard was lower than last week but today I felt slightly more inclined to fling myself at the ball, though I still leave near post gaps during wing attacks. And it may be my imagination but the star jump does seem to intimidate opponents to at least throwing inaccurately.

Thing that I'm darn scared about is that the IHG court has a goalkeeping area 6m in radius while in KE we're training with one at least 8 m away and even then I'm not saving everything thrown at me. Must buck up.

Am included in the IHG team for next year. Loo Bin chose black for the goalkeeper's outfits reason being "It won't look dirty if we dive" haha... Which is quite cool cos my standard interior fencing outfit for FM is already all black. Pro keepers also wear track pants while playing. Thing is, I'll only tear mine if I play in them, so I'll stick to shorts for now. Thank God for the creation of the flat anterior surface of the tibia which allows a pretty secure deflection of low ricochetting shots.

Also experienced for the first time the medical condition called "Handball Goalie's Elbow" (search Google if you doubt its existence!) cos I was jumping left when the ball was going right. At least the shot didn't go in =D

Ah before I go on somemore I should sleep. Goodnight all...

Well just a short picture post today... Am seriously busy but riding out the wave of pressure since PBL and anat tuit's over and I actually could answer the questions.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Having Med Wei Lun refereeing my match against YanLi meant that my final few attacks had to be super obvious (no slight against him, since he was just starting yea), but end result was that though I got the point through a fleche, his blade hit smack on the seam of my left arm (the unprotected side with no plastron), tore through and gave me the above pretty scar (which has now turned a lovely yellow).

There was the Rookies' Fencing Competition in NUS yesterday... Went down to help referee... I have a feeling some people weren't too happy with my decisions, but electricity doesn't lie and my eyes rarely do...

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Angie's blade (yellow handle) and mine (blue handle) on my pile of fencing stuff in my room. She gave it to me to safekeep before the competition... Just look how nice her hand guard is compared to mine!! No matter how much I hammer away in FM, I can never get it back into shape..

Saturday summers when I was a kid,
We'd run to the school yard and here's what we did,
We'd pick out the captains and we'd choose up the teams,
It was always a measure of my self esteem.
Cause the fastest, the strongest played shortstop and first,
the last ones they picked were the worst.
I never needed to ask, it was sealed,
I just took up my place in right field.

Playing right field, its easy you know,
You can be awkward, you can be slow,
That's why I'm here in right field,
Just watching the dandelions grow.

Playing right field can be lonely and dull,
Little leagues never have lefties that pull,
I dream of the day, when they hit one my way,
They never did, but still I would pray,
That I'd make a fantastic catch on the run,
And not lose the ball in the sun.
And then I'd awake from this long reverie,
And pray that the ball never came out to me.
Here in ...

Off in the distance, the game's dragging on,
There's strikes on the batter, some runners are on,
I don't know the inning, I've forgotten the score.
The whole team is yelling and I don't know what for,
Suddenly everyone's looking at me,
My mind has been wandering, what could it be?
They point to the sky and I look up above,
And the baseball falls into my glove!

Here in right field, Its important you know,
You gotta know how to catch, you gotta know how to throw,
That's why I'm here in right field,
Just watching the dandelions grow.

-"Right Field" by Peter, Paul and Mary

Such a nice funny song! Reminds me of me cos of my hmm ineptitude for any game other than fencing =Pp It so reflects my own wishes and dreams when playing games...

I need wisdom regarding my future as a St. John instructor: Whether I can still commit the time and energy to continue helping out. Yet leaving means the virtual decapitation of the senior comm, since Ann Chi's no longer in S'pore and Yiyang and I are both busy.

Still, walking around watching them train today brought back not a few memories...

Went to NUH today. Not sure if the stuff there is classified but it was REALLY cool! haha... Fun sharing the experience with my anat group, even though they do do their best to arrow me, but all's unfortunately fair in love war and tuitorial...

Today was pretty fun sports-wise. Went to NUS training and fenced with Angie, Jason and two seniors. I won't state scores, but after losing a match 7-6 to one of the seniors after having a two point lead, I'd say that I need a lot more imagination fencing left-handers than constant flicking. Only one point between Jason and the senior was a point hit. Besides that, side flicks and close quarters was the name of the game =(

Med Wei Lun also was a pretty interesting referee =D

Handball wasn't all that great cos today we weren't performing that well and the 'keepers let in one or two stupid shots... I know I let in at least two savable ones... Still, am learning better positioning under Loo Bin. I just have to train to the point when I can make a split second decision to dive for a ball or to just slide for it with my legs...

And to round off a fun day, celebrated Melvin's birthday at C block lounge =) Not often that the year 1 medics get to see everyone else (though we know each other exists). Seriously, if it weren't for hall I'd know so much fewer (bad english) people! But happy birthday Melvin!

And also, Happy Birthday Wei Lun! Our one comp team member we always wanted to tekan during his birthday but never got a chance to =D There are few friends in the world whom one can communicate with telepathically, but somehow, 7 years of St. John, starting with us always having to fall in next to each other (height issues) seem to have brought that about!
