Its 3.20am! What the heck am I doing up so late!

It all started with going fencing... And actually I was going to leave early but Coach (who safely got back from Germany) persuaded me to stay... Not bad I finished 2 out of 5 fencers after losing 15-5!! to Joo Chiao of all people, so I guess its not such a bad loss =)

Haha was quite shocked. I only lost one round robin to JC, and scored a freak 5-4 victory over Shawn yeeks. Am probably gonna visit NUS fencing on thursday and fence Jason heh.

Came back at 12 and have been typing up PBL and reading through anat since... But to accompany me I have a lovely Roger Whittaker CD from my father, and almost every song is one which I like! His songs are all those really beautiful and sad at the same time songs... Its not just the words, but also the lyrics =)

This is "The Last Farewell", his greatest hit:

There's a ship lies rigged and ready in the harbor
Tomorrow for old England she sails
Far away from your land of endless sunshine
To my land full of rainy skies and gales
And I shall be aboard that ship tomorrow
Though my heart is full of tears at this farewell

CHORUS:
For you are beautiful, and I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell
For you are beautiful, and I have loved you dearly
More dearly than the spoken word can tell

I've heard there's a wicked war a-blazing
And the taste of war I know so very well
Even now I see the foreign flag a-raising
Their guns on fire as we sail into hell
I have no fear of death, it brings no sorrow
But how bitter will be this last farewell

Though death and darkness gather all about me
My ship be torn apart upon the seas
I shall smell again the fragrance of these islands
In the heaving waves that brought me once to thee
And should I return home safe again to England
I shall watch the English mist roll through the dale

-The Last Farewell, Roger Whittaker

Long long time with no posts haha... Was kinda busy in the last week, but WOW the last week was the most interesting and the most fun week since school started proper (i.e. excluding medicamp, KE orientation and rag)!

Interesting cos this week I managed to punch myself in the eye, stab myself with a fork and I passed my BTT =) and was so relieved I fell off the kerb in front of Ubi CDC in front of quite a lot of people. Funny how I've managed to be so self-destructive through sec. school (walking into a pillar in front of my Squad 1 IC when I was sec 1) till now, yet never caused anyone else injury in doing so...

Fun because of several activities:

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Meeting with my VJ classmates one last time before ChuaH was posted to Thailand on Saturday. It was a great night with a lot of yelling and stress =Pp and fun cos we went to Minds' Cafe at Dhoby Ghaut. I must say such places promote choking but are enormously amusing haha... Not to mention mixing with a whole lot of friends whom many of us hadn't seen for quite a while. One night of really no stress =)

Just look at the two extra people in the background of the photo!

Me, Liling, Stella and ChuaH. Just recalling the way the two Jonathans would get into friendly debates with the two girls and get repulsed by high pitched whining makes me want to laugh (yes it did happen. I remember very clearly)

Playhouse yesterday was pretty good... Ended up doing more stuff than I thought I would be (I was recruited very recently, I think, at the end or start of last or this week respectively. Thought I would only be carrying a couple of props, but in the end it was quite fun jumping over other years' props with Li Heng (T ango Wing-ers are just made for sai-kang =Pp), talking nonsense and accusing other people's platoons for setting fire to the Live Fire Area, and above all, putting into action Med Wei Lun's impromptu plan of dropping a suitcase when he got flung backstage by Arjun heh....

Anyway, our play went down quite well and our resident construction worker really drew a lot of laughs heh... All that was missing were the yellow boots =Pp Some people said it was commendable for a year 1 play =) So kudos to Shaun and gang!

In event, M4s (with my sister) owned the play! Their props and acting were really elaborate, not to mention terribly funny (Pinky and the brain took the biscuit heh)... I have a feeling Zichun nearly died in his seat =Pp

And to round up a great week, rendevoused with my St. John friends, whom I hadn't seen much of (except for Jiayan), especially Wei Quan, my long-suffering number 4, and Lay Theng, my long-suffering secretary and 2nd lieutenant (navy speaking). I came really late, but had enough time to have dinner at Kenny Rogers, then walked around a lot and helped girls take pictures heh... No matter how much we complained bout St. John when we were in AHS, I think for most of us it was THE defining moment of our lives (NOT Exercise Spade), and THE period of time in which our closest friends were made. Pity not more ambulances came, but oh well, no doubt someone will one day throw out another suggestion to go out, when Wei Lun et al have finished their training =)

For details and pictures go Jiayan's blog (I'll post here if and when I have them). Oh yes, she gave me a lift back to bedok (and yes I didn't have a heart attack, but my RR-intervals shortened slightly) and told me a lot bout driving.. Anyway, thanks to the nursings for the outing!!

And if that wasn't a good ending, I got an email saying I was in the KE IHG team for handball!! yay! Now I shall train AHAP and pray I don't break any appendages along the way =D until my white muscle becomes a higher type heh.. and if at the end of the day I can REALLY do a split (though I doubt my illiopsoas is up to it!) that's a bonus =Pp

Well cheerio for now! Book in time!

And to my little fellow Jonathan and my tall fencing buddy, all the best and take care in Thailand (though they won't see this)

Just received the St. John competition schedule from one of the junior-seniors... Was having lunch with my OG mates between lects when it came. Jason said "Wah! You're still going back arh!" and MedWeilun said "What for you want to go back?"

Haha I wonder whether the friends of my own seniors used to say the same things to them... I never thought I'd one day be a St. John senior instructor... Especially not when I was a tiny sec. 2 fellow... I used to think St. John seniors and officers were people who lived in coffins in the day and came around the late afternoons to kill cadets, saving up enough energy to give cadets 3 days of hell in St.John camp =Pp

Only when I became an NCO and a senior myself then suddenly I realised its a lot harder than it looks... Then one day I suddenly happen to be the second-most senior person coming! Where have those days of being a kid gone!!! Mann...

I never thought my seniors would be normal people, who go to university, mug like mad, complain to their friends, go out, play soccer, stay in hall, fiddle with their laptops till the wee hours of the morning before repeating the cycle heh... As I said, I always thought they were slightly devilish, albeit highly experienced in first aid and all... Even now, I'm still scared of a few of them and don't dare to talk to them during reunions heh...

Anyway, happens that comp training falls on a very busy period of my academic year, so I'll see how whether I can come back or not. What with mugging, phyio pracs and hall CCAs...

Just came back from a mini KE7 handball supper... We watched a couple of matches, including the Germany-Croatia match from the Olympics and OH MY GOODNESS their keepers are SO PRO and almost all of them are able to do splits... Eric was saying that our keepers should do exchange programmes with wushu heh...

Well, just a clip of what we're supposed to be capable of doing...

Well then that's it for now... Biochem over the weekend!

I was looking through my "Internet Favourites" and came across an MV of "All I Have to do is Dream", and suddenly it was like I was back in that shop in Parkway with ChuaH Liling and Vibha buying flowers for dance concert when I heard the song and I was asking them "What song's that!?" and of course, between a choir guy, a violinist and guitarist, they could enlighten me heh.

And of course later Enjie, whose face was illuminated red from the influence of alcohol, and so looked like a mobile traffic light, joined to us to walk around and eat Topless 5 at Swensen's "to detox" and all...

I miss JC sigh. Watching my brother go through his VJ life sometimes makes me feel really really jealous! But I guess I won't be missing A-levels and all the arguments bout fencing, though I guess those did make JC fruitful in the end heh... I mean, PW is almost over... then thinking bout how we did our PW presentations (and I was the first one in the room to get called and Christl's face was like "ahhhh!!!") and went to town and etc...

Ah heck now I'm rambling...

Anyway, got my M1 soccer jersey which is red (the outfield players are dark blue, not unlike SAJC's girls' soccer team), so by the end of the year I'm gonna have SO many red jerseys haha.. We had a friendly against some friends of our captain and Marcus n Med Weilun couldn't come so I ended up being keeper...

We lost 4-2 but it was still good in the sense that none of the goals were my fault =Pp and I did manage to time a few good runs to dive on loose balls n stuff... A slight improvement. I wish I could play at least like that during KE trainings...

Well, anyway, its back to mugging now that the post-CA refractory period's wearing off..

And one good thing I realise which I thank God for... I may actually have better friends than I realise =)

Having missed the screening of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, I found this on Youtube one week back, as well as other clips of the final battle (in which Sirius Black dies).

Am I the only one who feels that the stance and actions for wizard duels are derived from that of fencing?

Watch Harry's sixte-disengage-flick at 1:32 and Hermione's stop hit on Ron at 2:55 - 2:57 heheh..

Ok anyway... TIRING WEEK man... With an average of say, 5 hours sleep a day, by the time Friday came during the moring F1 prayer meeting I think I was quite incoherent... Zichun had to tell me "I think you should go back and sleep". That said, I think I'm leading worship for like the second time in my life this thursday...

Had a lot of handball this week, playing for M1 as well as KE training... We lost to M2s 8-5, but it was a very messy match cos everyone was playing like basketball... A girl sitting at the sidelines waiting for us to clear the court (who was not from Med I presume) said something to the effect of "this is so not handball", a sentiment I shared..

I mean, basketball players could dribble from one end to the other n gleefully slam the ball past the keeper, but then their dribbling would all have been not valid in a real handball game... It was a miracle the M2 score didn't go into double digits. The holes in the defence would have admitted entry of a Star Destroyer. But I guess everyone learns and I have not much right to be critical since I was one of the few who had ever touched a handball also.

Handball training in KE was one of the most fun yet heh.. I think cos the Med game warmed me up... Trainings have now settled into a regular trend: The outfielders try to kill the keepers, and the keepers yell insults at everyone who misses =Pp... But it was a damaging session as Puneeth proceeded to get hit in the head, LooBin in the radius, and me in the solar plexus, leaving Desmond as the only unscarred goalkeeper by the end of the session =D

Aik Leong fed back to me that I was "very fast but sometimes too fast for my own good" which left me vulnerable to spinning and richochetting shots... So that's something I'll work on... Handball game screening and supper next friday whoo cos there's ICN on thursday so there'll be no training....

Right... have some friendly game all the way at WOODLANDS with M1 soccer team now.. When am I going to revise thorax? =D

The Facts of Life: The Good, the Bad and the Random

1. Foilists are inevitably shocked at circular sixte and octave cos those are such archaic epee moves to make. A good circular will give you a lovely hit to a rightie's chest, or an opportunity to flick to a lefty's back

2. In soccer, the day where you have the worst performance is inevitably the day when there are the most people around to watch you foul up

3. In soccer, drop kicks only fly far when you are in fact trying to just pass the ball to the centre of the field so that your captain can start the practise.

4. People at the corners of the Anat Theatrette are only called when you are the one sitting in the corner.

5. The stuff that comes out for CA is never what you specifically spent time on studying.

But that said, I guess I will miss Prof L ing's tuitorials. CA was not too bad (though I'm still not sure of bits here n there), and our next tutor is really good too.

But I'm still lousy at soccer. Give me a foil everytime...

Had a really satisfying foil training yesterday. My sparring-partner-for-the-day was a Leonard from SJI. Lower sec, but almost as tall as me -_-"' Also a met a girl who was only 12 years old, but couldn't have been shorter than ChuaH.. I'd daresay, in fact, her height was nearer Liling than ChuaH =Pp But then, she was half not-asian, so...

Anyway, Coach said I "move more like a foilist" now, except must work more on absense of blade to keep the opponent guessing.. We trained new stuff like fast attacks (sort of like fast-break in Handball). Not as flashy as backflicks, but nonetheless deadly effective as we found out in the later matches.. There is no feeling so satisfying as hitting someone at the end of a full extension fleche heh...

Was wondering why my fingers hurt so much after 1 1/2 hours of training, took off my glove and discovered I had worn a hole right through the layer and now a thick flap of my epidermis was hanging loose -_-"'. Like wow heheh... The last time I had this "oops I didn't know I had an injury" thing, it was at the base of my little finger and needed a roller bandage since it was in such an awkward position. Jiamin commented "I thought you punched a wall" (I'm accident prone but not THAT accident prone).

Anyway, was watching the foil finals from the World Championships this year. The two top fencers, in fact, do NOT crouch down until their foreleg is almost 90 degrees flexed at the knee, but somehow they are still the finalists. I wonder if someone would call their technique "all wrong".

Anyway ANAT CA TOMORROW and my histology is still disgusting. The lymphoid tissue and the mammary gland combined are such hard-to-remember things... Right, shall stop for now...

Jiayi and I were wondering if reading "thorax and abdomen" in Moore on the MRT will get you sued for indecent exposure from a book... heh hmmm..

Our tutor brought up a song about urea sung to the tune of "The Bold Gendarmes" I went searching for the original song and the original lyrics are really quite funny heh...

But seriously if we memorized the lyrics of the song it's really quite effective!

I went back n also looked for it on the net. Found another two songs on the Kreb's Cycle (Sung to "waltzing matilda") and glycolysis (The British Grenadiers) quite cool!

Anyway I went back to FM yesterday for the first time since properly starting lower limb. Quite cool... now when I get hit I know somewhat what's supposed to be there, especially for epee cos its the upper limb haha. The list of whacks I sustained included:

1. Contusion between thumb and index finger of left hand (Adductor Pollicis)

2. Slash over dorsal surface of left hand (1st and 2nd metacarpals)

3. Hit at the superior aspect of the biceps (Median nerve and the muscle itself. Was unable to flex arm properly to pull the newspapers from across the table properly)

4. Aching right leg (Quadriceps, hamstrings and triceps surae. Now I can't climb stairs properly bah)

Thank God there was no soccer training today or I would probably have just died...

Anyway Anat practical was darn traumatizing, and I saved Shawn's backside today at Anat tuitorial.. Prof Ling just likes my face so much haha..

Tuesday, October 02, 2007

Three things are capable of pushing me in Med School when I'm feeling tired.

1. Of friends who would have given anything to be here but are not.

2. Friends in OCS who told me to "study hard arh! make your deferment worth it! Make sure you become a good MO understand" heh (The last clause was, of course, said by ZhenRong

3. The original reason for wanting to be a doctor... Naive idealistic me...

I was just reconsidering my original want to be a doctor.. As early as Sec. 2 I knew that I wanted to do medical related stuff.. After all the St. John, minor cases, but it was a good experience and I related with first aid and etc more than anything I've ever enjoyed doing.

Then came the career guide which said that to be a paramedic your eyesight had to be less at 500 degrees, which I far exceeded. Medicine was the second best thing, and after proceeding through JC, being an instructor, researching all the medical stuff to train James and his team, I guess I finally confirmed what I wanted to be. Housemanship still sounds like hell though... But, as with St. John, and with OCS, so long as there's one reliable friend nearby, I'll survive.

Anyway, found this song in the Christian CD I brought back to hall. Am in love with it already and can't stop listening haha... Think it will join the ranks of "Seek Ye First", "Lead me to Calvary" and "There is a Redeemer". Meaningful also, considering some of the more unpleasant, or morally shaky things which go around sometimes.

Purify my heart
Let me be as gold and precious silver
Purify my heart
Let me be as gold, pure gold

Refiner's fire
My heart's one desire
Is to be holy
Set apart for You, Lord
I choose to be holy
Set apart for You, my Master
Ready to do Your will

Purify my heart
Cleanse me from within
And make me holy
Purify my heart
Cleanse me from my sin
Deep within

-Refiner's Fire, Brian Doerksen

And hope FA goes well tomorrow. There are just too many things in the foot to remember!
