Heheh... its been an interesting week... not the least because I've been doing one of those 24-hours-sleep-in-5-days stunts again. But oh well, this weekend is dedicated to the catching up on sleep =) Got a massive sleep debt to repay though...

Last night I even managed to fall asleep in a kneeling position while doing the DSTA survey and woke up with a numb body. Imagine falling asleep in the Ranger position, for SJ people...

Well anyway we did the silver mirror thing again on wednesday.... I mean, we were like making dozens of silver mirrors.... The verse in the Bible about Solomon making silver as plentiful in Jerusalem as there were stones or something springs to mind.... My mirror in fact, is still intact, but the almond smell still enamates from it so there's probably a leak somewhere... As they said in The Outsiders, "Nothing gold can stay", and considering that silver is more reactive than gold, I guess its only a matter of time... But no matter, I shall enjoy it while its around!!

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
From bottom left, anticlockwise: Jiamin and Poying's collection of silver mirrors... Jiamin's silver mirrors are like super nice... totally coated including the bottom
My three silver mirrors. The first two were overheated so the silver was more cloudy
My mirror with the Parafilm which turned out to be a big rip-off (forgive the pun) because it tore pretty quickly... if I hadn't taken out my mirror to play with during physics and caught a blast of almond to my nose, it would have oxidized before the day was out.
My mirror with duct tape from my file.... This held it till I got home, where it is still in not too bad a condition

I realised... what a waste of space talking about silver mirrors...

Oh yea, according to Liang Sheng, when Mr Chong got his "epileptic fit" in S23, Chee Hoe regretted not slapping him when he had the chance... heheh lucky I took mine...

Coach once said "Why do [people] do what they do?" I wonder what I'm doing with my life.... Seriously, its like living day to day... everyday go home, prepare tuitorial for the next day, then school, then home, then repeat again and again. At most maybe look forward to the next PE, or the next fencing session, or use fridays as a landmark where we have to wear our ties and sing school song yadayada. But almost half a year has gone and I don't know what I will do next time... its like I cannot imagine myself as anything other than a student, or maybe doing my NS... But a regular job, be it teacher, engineer, (maybe) doctor... I can't imagine myself grown up.. haha.. sorta weird...

And then again ain't it tiring to keep competiting in such a fast paced society? I mean, sure we get results (and sometimes we don't), we gain knowledge, become more "civilised" whatever, but at the expense of sleep, maybe relationships, I daresay, even meals (when was a last time you had a regular morning, afternoon and night meal for all 5 days of the week? Or maybe its just me.) which will just cause general unhealthiness.

Speculation speculation... well nothing's really gonna change. I guess I'll just leave it to God and see what happens...

Anyway, to wrap up, a few memories of the past:

Truth to be told, I don't have many, cos I only got a camera phone in mid Year 1

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
The time when everything was colourful and everyone didn't have much to think about... it all centered around "when's the next outing?"Acknowledgement: From Mr Chong's album

The busy-ness of JC life...

But at the end of the day, guess the most important thing is to still stay nice and relaxed eh? Haha (Yea, I just HAD to include a cat)

Alright then its really late... good night all

How does one take the blood pressure of one's ex-tuition teacher?

1. Put on the stethoscope

2. Check for brachial pulse

3. Discover you put the stethoscope on the wrong way.

4. Reset the stethoscope

5. Attach the cuff

6. Pump the cuff

7. Feel alarmed when the systolic reading starts at 180 mm Hg

8. Feel relieved when you discover that its cos you were shaking your leg with you free arm
touching the stethoscope

9. Repeat from Step 1 without steps 3 and 4

10. Discover that the thudding in the background was the heartbeat which you have missed

11. Pretend nothing is wrong, repeat step 9

12. Third time lucky! You get a good reading

13. Remove cuff with a fluorish and announce to your teacher that she has a healthy blood pressure

Heheh till today I've used my mother's sphygmomanometer three times... Once on myself (in which I nearly gave myself gangrene cos I didn't know how to use the cuff properly), my tuition teacher who used to teach me chinese, and my grandmother... =) But I guess taking people's blood pressure is nothing compared to other things in the medical field... unless your patient's b.p. is like 300 / 200 mm Hg or something =D hahahaha...

Anyway just finished watching "Ying Xiong", or Hero, as its known in the Western World, again. I couldn't remember anything about the show except that there were a lot of colours.... and the lines "好快的剑" which in the show is translated as "How swift thy sword"(strikes me as funny that QinShihuang would be using Shakespearean English) and the lines "去就是死" "死就一起死". Which literally means "To go is to die" "Die then die together lor" or something... Mushy...

This time while watching I discovered that

a) Jet Li has a marvellous fleche. Not only can he do it faster than a raindrop can fall, but he's accurate and maintains the same perpendicular distance above the ground while doing it. Also, despite the high velocity, his hair and his eyebrows never seem to be ruffled. And he can fleche so fast that a feller who has a longer reach than him cannot even touch him. He should have tried doing it on Maurice.

b) Chinese fighters always HAVE to do a somersault or some flashy move before making a thrust at their opponents. My goodness. Give me an epee and I would have taken out Qinshihuang's assasins for him with ease....=Pp

c) Everyone is the show is super strong, or are using rubber blades. I take the super strong one cos I doubt you can kill with a rubber blade unless you're aiming for the eye. But then again, how else can you do a quadruple flick unless you're very strong? With a solid pole of wood to boot. I mean, I haven't even seen a double flick in fencing, let alone a quardruple one.

You know what? I think the story is fictional. Why didn't I think of that before? Heheh but NONETHELESS I think its a nice movie lar...

Although I wouldn't mind learning Jet Li's fleche. Being able to fly at your opponent from 17 meters away would be a useful skill in fencing. I wouldn't mind my opponents somersaulting from 2 meters before attacking me either... so long as they don't land on me =)

Speaking of which... Coach has been telling me about new handholds for close quarters... basically loosening your grip as you twirl the blade behind your back so that the handle slips into a new position, which is more sharply angulated to hit your opponent... needs A LOT of practise though... n slightly painful to execute too..

Ah well.. FSI (purely for experience) is coming up soon... After that we'll have to start deciding if we want to take part in the 1st Inter-School tournemant in July, periliously close to prelims, and my birthday, again... haha...

Anyway... Chinese prelim is like 3 weeks away, and I'm still coming away from my lessons feeling stupid and inept, despite the fact that my exercise have all been not bad, and somehow I've been able to churn out one zuo wen a week, on top of the thick pile of pasages, tian xie's, chengyu's, shuyu's etcetc (if its difficult to produce one GP compo in 2 weeks, how easy is it to turn out 1 zuo wen a week? well, maybe for some people I know it would be chickenfeet, wings and the rest of its anatomy).

I'd rather go for third period PE. Even if I was unfit and found it terrible etc, at least PE doesn't have homework. I'm like doomed to study chinese till I go into NS.

But whats the use of thinking about it anyway. Right, gone for now..

If the past few days haven't been hectic, I don't know what has... but here are some photos of the events...

Image hosting by Photobucket
1. Sunday. I filed 1 year and 4 months work in 4 hours over the weekend. The dust flew and I had to empty my hole puncher twice before it was done (it was so full that punched paper was literally squirting out of the plastic holder before I decided that a emptying was in order =Pp) Heheh, now it looks so nice and neat I don't feel like studying!

Image hosting by Photobucket
2. Tuesday. David Poh: A case in point about lamentable lack of sleep among our students. I wonder which average JC students in an average class with a non-slack CCA will find time to sleep 1 hour for every 2 awake (i.e. 8 hours). It was raining heavily on tuesday and we were tearing our hair out over various tuitorials in the concourse... It always rains when I have chinese lesson...

3. Wednesday. The highlight of the First Aid Club for 2006: An inter-JC FA quiz jointly organized by Xuanyi, Poh Woon, Elaine and I, from VJ, TJ, TJ and VJ respectively. 9 JCs participated and it was super fun. I never had more fun doing casualty simulation breaking my arm than on that day... heheh.... all the fooling around in V35 trying to fall off chairs to "break my arm" convincingly, and dirtying my uniform kinda paid off.

Image hosting by Photobucket
The first question from the quiz (I was operating the keyboard)

Image hosting by Photobucket
Prize presentation. We were too busy running around the LT to take pictures during the actual quiz... I've never run up and down LT1 3 steps at a time so fast in my life. But VJ won, AJ got second and TJ third, and Chee Hoe got best individual. But then again, with all the DHSJAB people in our club, the chances of that was very high... Close fight though...

Image hosting by Photobucket
4. Also on wednesday was the Silver Mirror experiment

Image hosting by Photobucket
Which looks nice and gold here, but which oxidized before I reached FM that night... sigh next week I'm gonna bring my own test tube, and scotch tape to seal the thing with...

5. Thursday was Bio prac.

Image hosting by Photobucket
Who is the poor rat named "Phillip Harris" who died so that we could squint at his glomerulus and whatnot through a light microscope?
___________________________________________________________________

The very highlight of the week, though, goes to the dance concert (otherwise known as Regale, for the want of giving its official name), which I've just come home from... There are two words to describe it:

Spectacular, and its synonyms, because of all the steps (jumping, spinning, doing splits, and etc which I could have never done), and
Magical, and its synonyms, for this could well describe the atmosphere in the performance theatre... The whole thing was just captivating...

There was no Bio S today, so after the Physics R period, a few of us rushed down to Parkway to buy flowers. Alright, so I may not have much flower sense... heheh... there was this REALLY COOL water feature there with dry ice vapour coming out....

Went to the foodcourt to eat and then to Swensen's to share a topless 5... Or two.... Enjie met us in a slightly ineribriated state due to taking in some alcohol on the way... He was so red like a human traffic light =D... We ate A LOT of chocolate ice cream, hoping it would help to neutralize the chocolate effect. It didn't.

Before the meal started, Liling hit her leg sliding into the seat. As the meal started, before 3 spoonfuls were taken, she elbowed ChuaH in the arm while his spoon was in his mouth. Above shown is the reactions of the above-mentioned perpetrator (looking decidedly amused) and the victim (looking decidedly peeved). Then Vibha spilled a little bit of ice cream. On the way out, a waitress dropped a stack of menus. I think I'm giving out the same kind of aura on other people that Stella exerted last time on myself... =/ But whatever, we had a really fun time! (And I bet I'm fatter now)

One more thing. I DON'T sound good talking in a higher voice.

Image hosting by Photobucket
Frantic wrapping took place back in school. In the end we produced these.

The concert will take too long to elaborate on... But believe me it was great. Our 3 classmates dancing were fantastic too! Dancing looks really tiring... But it was so oh-my-goodness (if there were "screw-ups, as Mursjid said, I didn't see them)... haha... Now I feel slightly more inspired for the next comp, whenever that is...

Oh yea, feel a little more than slightly inspired to save money for another concert ;-) Looks like I should start eating Beehoon for an extended period of time..

Went home with Enjie... we had a really fun time recounting anecdotes about Uniform Group life... haha... I'm so gonna recommend my children (if I have any) to a) join a U group and b) learn a sport.

Well, thats it for now then... Had a really fun but tiring day the former thanks to my classmates and the dance people =)... the latter due to an unforgiving JC schedule

"Dark have been my dreams of late" -King Theoden, LOTR: The Two Towers

Sigh. Life has become quite... different... from last time. Gone is the innocence of "there's always tomorrow to play about with" when you consider after this year we're off to university blahblah. I mean, the idea of not doing well and getting a degree in, say, Ancient Philosophy or some ulu subject doesn't actually appeal to myself. And when you consider who else wants to get into medicine... Wow...

I've been thinking about, curiously, NS every night before I sleep. That's definitely the worst time to think of it, cos its when I'm especially tired. But oh man... the thought of sian-ing my two years away under a helmet that may be too small for me doesn't appeal to my senses... Not that its a waste of time, and not that I want to be a girl and do my NS by giving birth -_-'" but, dunno lar... haiyo.. I wonder what it will be like.... a two year long SJ camp maybe? Anyway,

Short term goal: Get gold for NAPFA.
Long term goal: Get 9 min 44 sec for 2.4 run, cos apparently then you can get a day off in NS.

There're things that hit closer to home for me (and I'm not the only one). Such a difference from what it used to be. Its virtually the same agony as watching the SJ division falling apart.

Ah well.

Random comment: Went back for foil again today for the first time in 5 weeks. It was horrendous... I was double parrying on my attack when I SHOULDN'T EVEN PARRY!!! Although my close quarters had a higher percentage hit, but still.... sigh.. My left arm has 5 bruises and my right leg has 2. What the.

Alright, then that will be it for the night...

Inter JC FA quiz tomorrow! Proudly presented by the chairs and tables of VJ FAC and TJ FAU!

The things you can make in the chemistry lab...

F&N Groovy Grape for instance, made by Nelson, no less

Image hosting by Photobucket

Or if you rather the more unromantic truth, its actually an iodine compound with sodium hydrogencarbonate in it =D Truth to be told, science prac has become kinda meaningless, except some of us want to do the silver mirror experiment which has been put off for 3 weeks already! But really, it just gives the tutors and excuse to have an extra 2 periods of tuitorial with us... not that tuitorials are bad, but 3 periods of one subject at one go is absolutely brain damaging.

FAC programme this wed is gonna be so super exciting =) Hope I can keep my end up... and not malu in front of the other JCs... Also better start planning some E&E... for those who know why, don't laugh, it ain't funny.

The scar is STILL there after 1 and a half weeks... Maurice is presently very pleased with himself... hahah... looking back on the match last last wed.. I mean, his reach would have to be almost 8 inches longer than mine... Stupid lar, gotta double or triple parry to even get near him... Well, its like, the danger of getting hit increases with inverse proportion with the distance to the target, until it reaches a peak about 2 m away from my opponent... After that its all in my favour, cos a small body and shorter limbs favour close quarters =D Just that getting there is very hard... blah... I shall consider getting a french grip with my next blade... That said, I hope mine doesn't break.

Dance concert is this friday, if I'm not wrong... The first time I'm attending any performing arts concert from kindergarten till now heheh.

Oh n all the best to all the people having their season now... especially those who have so much to fight for yup =)

13th April 2006

Sports Day again (a full 16 days earlier than last year). Cool weather meant that there were substantially less casualties, for which I'm thankful, but which meant that we had a really boring time sitting around the track trying not to fall asleep.

Sigh

One year ago do you remember what you were doing? 13th April 2005 was the wednesday after Music Fest (which was 8th April. I remember cos Zone Comp was 9th April). After Bio prac (the agar experiment if I'm not wrong), we would have gone to eat together at parkway or at katong, at least a third of the class. Then it would have been back for CCA, and then a few of us would have stayed back to watch the softball guys. Don't ask me how I can remember, I have my means of recollecting the past (Don't bother trying to read my archives... they're not from there). I can even remember that it started raining after the match.

Things are just so different between now and last time. Living the first part of last year was like living a dream. When you think back now, present circumstances now are so different that you think "did they really happen". Yeah, there might be some who say "that was then, stop dreaming and grow up" etcetc. But the changes were so subtle that I never caught them. One moment we were all so bonded and everything, and all of a sudden things have changed so much. It may be because of new schedules, CCA and all, but you have to admit that a year and maybe 2 months ago, it seemed hardly conceivable that there would be rifts that would eventually form.

Darn it I don't know how to put it.... I'm worn out from walking around carrying my stretcher and my right leg is exfoiliating like a rock and aching like mad due to fencing for an extended period of time for the first time in 3 weeks or something... I'm not writing coherntly and I know it, but I need to get this out of my system.

It just makes one very pek chek (frustrated, in hokkien). I wish that everything could return to the state that it once was.

But no, life has to go on though...

After attending 2 HQ trainings, there are some things which are very noticeable...

The difference between :

Ambulance and Nursing
It is very true what they say about girls using more of their brain to multi-task while guys can only concentrate on one thing at a time. Two weeks ago during lunch, my team sat quietly eating, with the silence only broken by myself asking what was the difference between shui jiaos and yun tuns (both different types of dumpling). On the other hand, the nursings talked, ate, laughed at the same time, much to the agitation of James who was in a rush to leave... heheh...

Home nursing and TOC:
I had the privilege to witness home nursing in action a few days back, a rare occurance given that I'm an ambulance... The only thing I could remember is "place cold compress at the patient [not casualty]'s neck, axillia and groin." Incidentally, when I asked my team if they could remember their home nursing, what they could remember was that something had to placed at the casualty's groin and not much else.

Home nursing tickled me a lot cos its when you see the nursings expressing their sorta "feminine" side, as Bixia expressed... which actually is rarely seen in SJ situations, since the nursings are usually being as resilient as the guys....

But what triggered my laughing fit was the STARK CONTRAST between home nursing and TOC (Transportation of Casualty, to non-SJers). TOC starts as such:

Wei Lun: Squad, Keluar Baris!
Xuan Cheng: Turn check *bang* check up check down check 1, 2, 3 *bang*
Wei Lun: No. 2 and 4 open stretcher, No. 3 follow me, move!
All of us: Yes No. 1!!!

whereupon there is a flurry of controlled panic as we go for the stretchers and casualty... its all speed speed speed, stability and strength (typical male -_-'")... Oh, and a little safety thrown in too...

On the other hand, home nursing is all skill and EQ... it starts as such:

No. 1: Team gather

and all the members surround the patient and, in effect, go "Hello hello hello, we are your home nurses for today to entertain you" yadayada... While TOC is flashy but straightforward, I take my hat off to the nursings for Home Nursing is probably one of the most complicated procedures (to an ignoramus like myself), preparing trolleys, talking to patients etc... There's so much to memorise its probably the equivalent of Bio among the 3 sciences... the simplicity of TOC likens it to Physics.... there is a fixed formula (its always 3-man carrier)... you just have to adapt your moves to the situation...

But then again, thats why Home Nursing has 150 marks while TOC has only 50... If TOC and footdrill were more important, we wouldn't have missed 3rd place in the N-comp by 0.4 marks 2 years back =D

It was fun learning about wound dressing etc though....

Well, thats it for now... hmm its late... pah...

By the way... the mark from Maurice's abortive flick on my arm is still there after almost a week... I think I'm permanently scarred or something...

Wahoo! SPA's over! Finally! While I mean no disrespect to the education system, SPA is a seriously useless method of examination cos everyone goes at staggered times, so information leaks out faster than blood from a severed femoral artery, especially given that VJ is a small JC and there are few places you can go to (aside from the A51 tables) without people yelling "Hey! Colour change is from orange from yellow right?!" and so on.

Anyway its been a week of migration (from VJ back to AHS) as well as a week of severe coughing. Its virtually impossible to sleep soundly... every few hours one leaps awake coughing like siao. My mother says that a throat infection could have tickled the last vestiges of my childhood asthma... so now I'm supposed to carry my Ventolin inhaler around with me... in my bag, that is... my pockets are too full, as many of my classmates would know.

N oh man, how I miss the younger and more innocent days in St. John (when I wasn't being pelted by letters from mindef). Today I went back and with Wei Lun, discovered that traces of our St. John instinct still remain. At the command of "clear the classrooms" he almost took Jiayan's bag out also, before remembering that we could clear at a more sedate pace compared to the cadets... following the principle of "grab everyone's stuff and let's run before the seniors kill us" of our cadet days. During debrief we shared a chair, like we used to in sec. 1 and 2, as well as a packet of biscuits...

And times when we could do this:
Image hosting by Photobucket

Of courses, other traces also remain, like a quick memory (I remember and forget major things quite fast, but remember little things... heheh), the way I walk ("like a robot!" -ChuaH), what I wear at home ("Heyy!! Camp attire!" - Weilun and I when he came to my house n we saw each other wearing white shirts and dark shorts)

Ah well, we've got to get on in life I suppose...

Anyway a few photos accumulated from the past few weeks... hehe... seems like so long ago man..

The day before zone comp.... SiHui and Kiaboon were taking pictures.... To add to the colour of the Eastern JCs, they decapitated Wei Lun and SiHui wore his head on her shoulder:
Image hosting by Photobucket

Following which, they posed with Wei Lun's headless body:
Image hosting by Photobucket

Later on though, they were kind enough to return him his head... apparently his temporary incapacitation made him really tall...
Image hosting by Photobucket
Cos I look really short!

Image hosting by Photobucket
Ok more normal pics... FA sem last wednesday was quite good, although there was one part where I couldn't talk cos I was laughing too hard... heheh.. Pity no one remembered to bring a proper camera... we couldn't take pictures during the actual thing... =/

Image hosting by Photobucket
Our Bio tutor and his explanation on a plant's "Phlegm". My mother said "you should have put a spoon into his mouth, and broken a tooth so that he would need $500 for a crown!" for his stunt last friday heheh...

Well ok nothing much to write about really.... HQ training tomorrow again... hmm I wonder when I will be relieved... I hope it doesn't rain on monday... I really want to play badminton... haha

~JcZw~ at 10:02 pm

Monday, April 03, 2006

Ok so I'm totally bored out of my brain doing tuitorials... which is bad cos I haven't been doing many.. So to save myself I shall write my 3rd post in as many days... Here's the most random went-where-did-what post I've had for a very long time... Oh yes... the 200th post is approaching.. Time to think of something meaningful

... Spent the afternoon in AHS... Wong Li Ting and I were yelling at each other at the top of our lungs trying to outshout the rain. Debriefing is a pain in neck, quite literally, when the rain is pounding on the roof and you're suffering from a nasty cough.

That said, I wonder how I survived PE today... My adrenaline must have been keeping my airway open. Stella commented that I play badminton with a marked fencing kinda style... Didn't notice that before... only that I hold the raquet with my index finger extended along the shaft, cos it feels more natural for me.... My arm is gonna hurt tomorrow... All the flicking and whatnot... the thing about badminton is that you flick with a pronated hand and use all the muscles near the wrist.... tsktsk... instead of fencing when a flick is done only with the tendon near the thumb, or whatever tissue its called..

SPA... ok lar, I was feeling kinda detached and sian... And I was coughing and coughing... Bet I irritated the surrounding people... I was irritating myself! And just when I've been reading "The Hot Zone" and learning how Ebola patients virtually cough out their windpipe which has been liquefied by the virus... yuckS!

Our chem lecturer is just plain weird... He gave me (and probably the rest of the lecture group) the impression of sitting on a grenade with a loose pin. On the other hand, no self-respecting gentleman would lose one's temper, or pretend to (is it possible to PRETEND to lose your temper?). All I know is that when you're irritated, a cold quiet temper is a more economical use of energy than blowing your capillaries and detaching your retinas to shout at others. And to cap it all of, people who have abrupt changes of mood are either attention seeking or schiezophrenic (however you spell it). Of course, the third reason is that they could simply have really good friends.

After talking to several people, I'm still kinda irritated by the way a certain Bio tutor triggered my latent first aider instinct for a joke (Faking a medical condition to me has never been funny, as several of my SJ friends would know.... it causes the first aider undue stress). I still don't see the funny side of it, but ah well, its just a prank. I feel like slapping him again though =D

Well, I should stop thinking about it.... Just thinking about it gives me tachycardia...

Anyway, I just typed a LONG LONG post attributed to Squad 3 '06 about their session yesterday, as well as some stuff about honour, squad spirit, your physical limit etcetc then blogspot had a spasm and wiped everything out so I'm super irritated now...

Ok I need to stop, my alloted time on the computer's up anyway... I'll do it some other time...
