Back in VJ, when I was eating in the canteen, walking home, or going to fencing, I would see the hockey and the soccer people training. Sometimes if I was lucky I could see the 'keepers in action at the nearer goal. Seldom though, maybe cos it was nearer the road and collateral damage was to be minimized.

Never thought one day I'd be trying out for soccer and handball keeper in hall. For the latter I guess its still ok, though there are a great many people competing for the spot. But soccer, though I was the only keeper present that day, it was quite a miserable trial.

The pitch was ultra muddy and I was skidding all over. Its like, the opposing winger was running down the flank and I was guarding the near post, then he crossed the ball, and in trying to move back to the center of the goal, I fell flat on my back. Grrr...

Then there was the gigantic African senior who shot from outside the box (one of those Steven Gerrad shots), and I could see it coming perfectly and was telling myself to dive. Pushed off with my right foot to dive left. And unfortunately, by Newton's Third Law of Motion, when my right foot went up, my left foot got firmly implanted into the mud. So I kinda flailed about for one second before flopping onto my side like a cat that had too much to eat.

Oh heck. What i know about goalkeeping is what I read in Wikipedia. I don't know how to organize a wall, a defence or whatnot. But at least I learnt that being a 'keeper's not so much about making saves, but about rushing out at the appropriate times. Since the goal is so big, I guess if your opponent's in the box and has a clear shot you've had it. Especially if you're 1.65m.

Well shall stop here. Will update about our trip back to VJ today =D

Related to my family today how, while talking to Johanna's new competition team (NC3?) on friday, when asked "Any questions?", one girl said to me "Sir, I saw you at Bedok Central that day buying clothes with your mother". Waha mannnn seen doing one of my least favourite activities!!! The first time I REALLY go shopping for clothes since like Primary-something and I get seen =/ but oh well.

Back to St. John for the first time since before medicamp. Pity my early anat group slots mainly over holidays and exam periods for my juniors. Don't think I'll have time to train teams this end-year, unless some have saturday trainings. And even if I do, I'm pretty sure I'll be assigned an ambulance team and ply my trade teaching TOC rather than sitting around during blur in home nursing.

Still, first aid is my first love haha... Learning how the body works and what things can go wrong, as well as learning the odd thing on the side like the chemcal structure of adrenaline's (though I can't really remember now) pretty interesting. Think that's why I find anatomy quite fun ahaha... Though there are SO MANY THINGS to remember!

Was also telling my sister what I said in the previous post about breaking limbs n all. She laughed and said "It [my paranoia] gets worst, especially during Ortho posting". Well done.

Anyway had Medicine DnD last night, which was quite fun, especially seeing all the different costumes haha. Forgot to bring camera though, so went around using everyone elses'. Wonder what I'm going to do with my jacket now, especially when apparently we're gonna get our KE ones quite soon. But it was good fun n good company also haha... The food was well worth the money =D

Epee and foil have been fixed up n angulated. All I need is sometime to go down to FM again and borrow plastic blades for drills, and conduct weight tests. 5 days to competition!

Signed up (or rather, got jio-ed into) soccer and handball as a 'keeper for KE. Took a newsletter from Pubs Comm booth (or rather, my sister gave me one) and realised that the KE 'keeper who just graduated (and who won Gold last year with the team) is an IVP player, and not only that, in the course of IHG he broke his nose -_-"'. I think I might die or something hoho....

Why would they want to replace a IVP player with a short, younger-than-average (deferment), myopic freshie? haha still, I guess its an honour to be asked to join, even if I may be only a benchwarmer.

Anyway, having finally concentrated and read Moore for upper limb bones, I realised that there are, in fact, MANY MANY things which can break / slip / dislocate / wear / tear while being a goalkeeper!!

Ok well besides that, signed up for Pubs Comm (writing) as well as Hall Play (tech crew, which according to my sister, isn't as busy as say, set decor). Don't know if its enough to stay in hall, but I'll see how it goes =)

Anyway, I think I'll be joining KE VCF. Not that Medicine people aren't nice (in fact, my CG in medicine is made of really nice people!), but I guess by Le Chatelier's Principle, if there are less people in KE, that's where I should be =)

Nuts

F-block soooo nearly won soccer today, except for a penalty shot which was just too fast for me to keep out. But having played it over in my head, I don't think I would have been able to keep it out unless I had guessed the shot direction (as opposed to reacting to the shot as I did).

Same old story. VJ people are lousy at penalty shoot-outs heh. Still, it was fun I guess. I hope I'll be good enough to join something like handball or something. It would be nice to have some formal training for once instead of copying what I see in youtube.

Sigghhhh as it was we won a lot of second places, but no firsts...

On a happier note, first aid went very well today haha... It was like revisiting sec. 1. Met Wang Zi from 4F who was one of the SCDF people teaching CPR. He was like "what are you doing here! YOU should be the one teaching!" haha...

But I'd rather requalify my first aid than go out, treat someone with an expired cert, and get sued if anything goes wrong.

It gave such a sense of pride in AHSJAB when the instructor asked me which corps I came from after he realised I was an [expired] SJAB member. When I replied "Anglican", he said "Anglican! Champions this year right!" and I was happily saying "Yes sir they were" haha...

Well three days to DnD...

My goodness! I just realised this week's gonna be super busy again and I'm supposed to be a medical student with tons of stuff to study, and having read a few pages of upper limb from Moore, I'm inclined to feel a little scared! I mean, I could remember Bio pretty ok from A-levels, but this is like SUPER bio! Bio with LATIN inside!

And I'm staying in HALL also!! But still, seems like a lot of seniors stay inside and get away with it... Heck, some of them even get into the Dean's List!

Anyway coming up this week...

1. Fencing on tuesday! Meeting the NUS foil team at last haha..

2. Soccer finals between F-block and whoever on tuesday also. Wonder if I'm gonna be drafted as goalkeeper again. I can't imagine how I dared to dive at opponent's feet like on friday! I mean, its just not human to stick one's rather larger-than average head in front of a rather hard soccer ball.

3. First Aid on wed n thurs

4. Badminton with OG on thurs

5. CCA walkabout in KE on thurs (by the way, thanks KE Eric and Zichun for giving me career advice about my continued existence in KE next year =D)

6. Maybe St. John on friday, if my anat prac goes back to its original timeslot?

And still must find time to train OG Wei Lun (as opposed to SJ Wei Lun) to be a reasonable epeeist by next saturday!!

But then this is probably just induced panic from reading Moore and discovering there are 8 carpal bones who's names I can't remember but are very long.

Well shall wrap up here. Shall try and have nice thoughts of F-block winning soccer =D

Fight fight fight like champions
Win win win like champions
Fight like champions, win like champions
All the rest can go fly kite
Fly kite, fly kite
All the rest can go fly kite
Fly kite, fly kite
All the rest can go fly kite

Just one of the F-block cheers which I've been hearing these few days at Inter-block games.

Just a few days ago I was feeling that I was very lousy n very un-enthu cos almost everyone I knew in F-block joined block comm n I didn't (not that I had a particular interest also), n also got thrashed at badminton in IBG.

Then today played handball and soccer n I could play in my favourite position again as keeper!! Was absolutely terrified of getting injured, cos the first shot I practised with Arjun went right into my solar plexus n knocked the air out of me, and also really scared that I would malu!!! Especially since never played handball before, just read about it in wikipedia.

But thank God everything went well and it was really really fun! Hahah think shall try joining handball in KE and see what comes of it... And if today's game was any indication, the size of the goal means that I'm not TOO disadvantaged by height haha...

Its so unreal when you see the opponent suddenly leaping way up high from the crowd of defenders with the ball in the upper hand. Then at the peak of his throw, time seems to stand still, and you can somehow see where he's aiming at, which lines are blocked by the defenders, and then next moment the balls hurtling at you and its just whether you or the ball is faster. Didn't move the wrong way a single time haha... Just that I let three goals past cos I was just too slow grrrrrr.

Soccer was the usual... Let in one at the near post while recovering from a dive blahhh... N my lack of night vision meant I couldn't see my teammates when doing goalkick haha...

Anyway yea it was so fun!! And got to know my blockmates better during the thing also =) That they said I played ok was a bonus as well!

Yet there are other things in hall which I value. Like the morning prayer meetings organized by Peng Siang and including me, Zichun and Louis (APS' neighbour). They serve to wake me up, refresh me, make me feel slightly happier, not to mention keping abreast of what's going on in KE VCF. Though I sometimes grumble to myself when I wake up early, but at the end of the day I think its a good thing to have =)

Well shall stop here... Its been quite an eventful day!

First week of school's been pretty ok so far. A nice change from army at very least.

Its so nice that I've met a lot of people I didn't think I'd ever meet again, people whom I've met in passing but never really gotten to know. Ying Hui from KHS was one of them.

Then there's Hanjie, the M2, who did a hospital attachment at CGH with me in '05 (see my Dec 2005 archives), who actually got into med in the end, together with Derek, the OTHER Year 2 who was doing the posting with us.

Woon Li from RJ fencing, Candice(who I ran into today also!) 's teammate whom I got to know at novices suddenly appeared also haha. Cool.

And last night Kiaboon and Vanessa visited my room where we had a hilarious webcam cum MSN convo with Sihui and Evelyn ahha.. today met with Bixia, Jiayan, Kiaboon and later Joanne + Stacy for lunch! One of the things I enjoy most about St. John is how we can not see each other for 2 or 3 years, then the moment we see each other we can start suan-ing each other almost immediately again ahah... Pity my teammates couldn't come, so I ended up being the only very privileged ambulance member...

I wouldn't be surprised if somone from Kong Hwa Scouts suddenly appeared and said hi... Still making friends faster than ever before... In med, in VCF both KE and Med (and I can't decide which side to join!), even in today's archery intro got to know 5 new people from business and science!

Inter-block games these few days. Am playing handball tomorrow I hope, or at least will be there to warm the bench. Probably reserve for road relay on sunday also, though I run relatively slowly haha...

Hard to believe that my OG is larger than my JC class also haha... Hmmm but I still miss JC days somehow, although uni is really fun in its own way and I wouldn't go into another OG for anything, but 15 was also pretty unique in itself... Just a different culture I guess.

Its like, when I'm with my OG its fun to talk with them n everything, but whenever I talk to a SJer or someone from my VJ class, then I remember that my friendships from the past are actually, still quite present and quite possibly future too heh..

Guess the saying bout new friends and old friends and silver and gold is quite true eh =)

Well, shall stop here... N some of the stuff mentioned at the MCF meeting today was pretty reassuring =) Looks like these 5 years are going to be fun!

Been a tiring few days. Haven't been so sleep deprived since platoon field camp. But as in all situations, "it could have been worst". At least there was air-con, and at least we didn't have to camo on.

Stayed overnight in the PGP common room together with 5 friends from my OG, pushed off to the padang very very early. Everything was pretty monotonous from there... Touching up, directing lost people around... Oh yea but ran into Stella prepping for FASS dance haha.

But like I said, it was pretty monotonous until we had to shift our props in the afternoon. Still, having been a CCA leader, can empathize with the M2 Rag ICs' reasons for calling us down, who, even as I'm typing this, are probably down at Med Fac getting everything unloaded and everything packed up prior to dismantling tomorrow. Its everything about contingencies. Heavy rain. Catastrophic structural failure. Props damaged in transit (if, unlike today, there had been more than one prop damaged, more than one OG would have been needed also)

I don't know what people think of me and my leadership style. But when I'm leading a group of people which actually I have no written authority over (unlike a uniformed group when you can say "you must listen to me cos I have two stripes and you don't), I'll tell them what they have to do, what I intend to do, and if they don't follow my example then whatever.

One of the things which I remember from my hospital attachment was when the housemen wanted to go out of hospital during lunch break for lunch. Only one disagreed saying "what if the patients suddenly needs a doctor", who eventually ended up staying behind in the hospital. Yes. A what if, and a what if [a very unlikely thing] happens also. But this is a sense of duty was one which I remember very clearly.

Have had my own experience. Thought it was alright for me to leave so I did. And something happened, involving a personal friend. And I couldn't do anything about it cos I wasn't there. Knew what to do, but wrong place at the wrong time. Lousy first aider. I will NEVER let this happen again if I can help it. Call it idealistic. So there. How else will I be a good first aider otherwise? Or a doctor for that matter.

Am disappointed with myself. Dunno if I could have done anything better. We had such a chance. Everyone said so. But something went wrong along the way. I don't know if I could have done anything to change things. Guess the leader should never be absent huh. Not for anything, orientation or laptop collection or anything.

Its been a tiring day. Tempers are short. Guess I should stop for now then.

Amazing haha... Who'd have thought that after almost a decade, I would meet a primary school friend in Medicine, one whom I had almost never talked to or gotten to know (mostly on account that both of us were quite quiet) in the one year we were in the same class.

Nevertheless, it was nice to meet you again Ying Hui! (And man... I apparently haven't changed physically since primary school, other than growing maybe haha)

Have been watching many videos on Youtube these few days. Attempted to find some of those National Day Song MVs. So far have found "We are Singapore", "Count on me", "One united people" and etc... There don't seem to be any of the obscure ones which are still quite nice like "Who are you my country" and all =/ But its a good start =D

I want to find the one for "Count on me Singapore" which has the teacher asking the students what they want to be next time (as mentioned in last year's post)!! That's such a touching vid! And it must exist somewhere! If "Silence is Golden" can turn out to be real, I'm sure this video is not a figment of my imagination!

Also came across our farewell assembly video, which I watched again haha... The clips of orientation brought back such nice memories, all the more because I'm still in the orientation stage (more or less) of university haha.. Like how the first day was so sian but by the time we came to sea regatta we were finding every excuse to cheer haha...

National Day was pretty eventful. Went to town to look for dnd stuff with Lakota people... And my attitude to shopping hasn't changed since I went with Soo Yee, Evelyn and Wei Quan last time haha... But it was a good change to get out of the house instead of staying and playing computer. Then I missed the first part of NDP cos I thought the parade started at 6.30, not 6.15! grrrrr... Missed the march-in and the bits which Xuan Cheng loved to imitate the most (PAN-DAN! KE-HA-DA-PAN! PANNNNNNNNN-DAN!) last time.

But this year was sooooo good!!! Especially the fly past by the helos during the National Anthem, and the display after the parade segment! And we all loved the little children from Clementi Primary School who were waving at the camera instead of dancing =D The starfish were especially adorable hahah... Oh looks like this year St. John and Red Cross had their own individual contingents instead of combining together.

Oh well, another memorable NDP to be picked over by Wei Lun and I haha... Shall stop here. One day to rag day! And happy birthday Liling!

Hoho... Finally obtained my laptop (which I mentioned is quite big n heavy, but oh well, it will serve its purpose nicely. Shall keep all fluid n stuff away from it =D), with which I'm writing this post (just to test if it functions ok). Seems that I'm in one of those "good" rooms where the wireless connection is not twitchy. Only thing is I keep stretching my hand out to the right to find the mouse which is not there heh. Am not going to install it yet.

Am nice and comfortably installed in my room. The routines of breakfast and dinner will start this week also.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketPhoto Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketPhoto Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
My room from the various angles. That's my KE OG's flag against the wall n my foil hanging from the hook heh.

Life's still ok... Had the experience of doing rag till 2 am (thanks Christina for coming down also), freshman inauguration ceremony and etc.

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
Jiayi, Moses, Wei Lun all wearing the same colour hoho... And Jason was still in Lakota-green mood.

Also ice-skating with the OG n some seniors after that at Jurong. The price is soooo expensive now that Kallang is no longer there to compete haha.. But it was fun lar... Then we got to watch an ice hockey match after that which was really really interesting since you almost never get to watch these things in Singapore... Must be really scary to be an ice hockey keeper =D And as painful as fencing too...

Flag Day today. Morning was ok. Afternoon went to collect laptop. And after that hmmm Maybe it WAS a really inopportune moment for Co-Op to call, but yea, I guess... Just felt a bit... dunno how to describe.. when Glenn asked me how was the collection and I felt the cans one by one. Some were like whoa (in both extreme directions)

Maybe I AM a little too idealistic and too naive to think that everyone feels like I feel. But I guess since the only people in the world who feel the same way as me come from my St. John comp team its got something to do with what I learnt there.

Well shall wrap up here. Nice to know the computer works =)

~JcZw~ at 11:15 pm

Sunday, August 05, 2007

Am back from KE orientation which was pretty fun =D There were at least 3 meals with green vegetables to boot haha...

Have a pretty nice room which is nice n airy with a communal toilet which is not bad either haha... Ermmm have yet to REALLY mess up my room n make it like home though =Pp Must find a broom or something to sweep it up somemore.

Got to know a lot of people both from Block F as well as my OG, so I guess the year ahead's gonna be interesting, just HOW do people manage to balance both hall activities as well as studies??! But badminton, handball and hall play are catching my interest... The one sport which I'm good at, unfortunately, is not available at hall level =/

Rag is reaching the final phase and the seniors are really pia-ing their hearts out, so sorry KE, I'll be doing med float and flag this year. Cos unlike other halls and facs, the seniorest person at rag is usually a year 2 since year 3s and onwards are all in the hospitals. Yes, Medicine's chances of winning either are slim compared to the other faculties, but if I was in the habit of competing for winning, I wouldn't own an FSI shirt =)

What else? Oh signed up for the noob canoeing club (the one which plans one-star and two-star courses) as well as archery, just to see what its like haha... Welll just see how it goes lor... Also ordered a laptop for hall use. Don't ask me why I didn't buy it on the spot, but anyway won't be online on weekdays cos I'll be in KE =) All important messages please send to my phone.

Well today's message in church made me realise why I prize St. John so much above all my other CCAs. The sense of identity thing is really important eh? Well, thank God that what happened happened then

Shall stop here. Not really making sense anymore haha... But yea... school's starting whoo
