Whoa whoa whoa... scary... today my famil went out together... of course, one of our main topics was the tsunami that just hit in the Indian Ocean. And I came to realise something.

Some people might have realised, that my mother suffered from a back injury near the later part of this year, hence rendering us unable to travel overseas this hols. Our parents told us today that had we gone overseas, we would have gone to.... langkawi... or batu ferringi (is that how its spelt?) in penang. These two places are now ruined by the flood. Also, because of my mother's neck, my grandfather came to s'pore for his borthday celebration rather than have it in Malaysia. This caused my uncle in malaysia to come down to s'pore for the celebration, rather than visiting the eastern offshore islands of Malaysia, as is their usual practise, which are now innundated in the water of the Indian Ocean. Narrow escape? Maybe just an unusual change of event... I think its just God's plan. Isn't it amazing how things turn out like that?

I think it is. Something just for readers to chew on =)

Sorry... no post for so long... cos these few days certain parties have been coming my house to use the comp... heheh... and use my INK! And my WATER! Okay fine... its probably malaysia's water anyway...

Every time I attend CCA activities I am always amazed by two things: The commitment of some members that can be astounding and worthy of respect and admiration; or the lack thereof. I don't know why its like this anyway. I doubt many people actually LIKE the training, or actually LIKE doing first aid and doing pumping, TOC, blahblah. There are some, of course and that can be normally found too... But I think for many people the reason that they are commited is because of friends. At least for me, even though I was the cca leader and all that... The part I enjoyed most about CCA was interacting with the friends... all the more over the trainings, even if I did enjoy them too to a certain extent (which is why its sad to leave anyway, cos FA can still be done in JC if you simply join FAU).

Watching the cadets training these few days, sometimes I am very struck at the commitment some of them can display. Acts of staying just a little longer to finish a debrief, moving quickly to pack up fast, asking friends to come for training, makes one feel that... for these people... whether they do well for competition or not this coming year, they will do well one day. If they don't do well in this mock comp... it won't be for the lack of trying. I feel really really reallyyy proud to have been their senior for the past 1-3 years =) For others it is also not neccesarily their fault they can't come, cos of parental n all that yes... For most of us we will get that sooner or later. Its not the result that really counts.. its the effort that is put in. And when we see people putting in effort... its an encouraging reminder that there are still people that do want to do their best in everything they do. The sad fact, of course, is that sometimes things just don't turn out the way we want them to.

So... for tomorrow's mock comp... may everyone just put in their full commitment, and everything else will take care of itself. Whether you get first, last, is not important (I recall a certain AC team in 2001 mock comp only got 120+ upon 400? heh)

"The team that wins the competition is not neccesarily the best first aiders. They may just be the best actors."
-Dr Patrick Tan

Indeed. Its true! Do your best to be both! haha...

I really really totally find it mysterious that people complain about cyclists riding on the pavements. What are we supposed to do? Ride on the road and get knocked down? Yeah. Right. You cannot perform RTA when you're flatter than a bak kua laid open in the middle of the road.

Today I went ECP to cycle and to look for wide open spaces... just in case... you know... And it was raining like crazy, and here's me without any protection (cos i forgot to bring... my fault, I admit). And here come four crazy pedestrians strolling along in the centre of the cycling track warm n dry n comfy in their disposable ponchos. Okay. I'm travelling fast, the ground is wet, visibility is low. Is it within my legal rights to initiate an RTA on them? Hmph... I think not? Anyway, I nearly kill myself through violent evasive action, thats all.... And it happens a little while later... again... and again... The pedestrains are safe, thats all that matters, even though they are sauntering about in the middle of the cycling track. Yeah, blame it on the cyclists... How stewwwpid... I can understand that pedestrians don't like to come into close proximity with cyclists (I don't like it myself when I'm cycling), but walking around on a track which you're NOT supposed to walk around on... well, thats plain asking-for-trouble if you ask me... Grrrr.... Aiyar, I dunno whats other people's view on this, but I think cyclists should have the right of way on their own paths at least.

Oh yeah.... its the 3rd anniversary of our sq. 2 mock comp... which I for one (and wei lun for another) won't forget in a hurry... jia you for mock comp guys!

Heyheyhey! Christmas is over yes... one more year and it will come again... Several things have happened these few days.

Received word from my fencing coach that if i joined VJ fencing, it would be unlikely to clash with St. John activities, since they usually train on monday evenings and saturday afternoons. Of course, it remains to my subject combination and timetable next year that will determine whether I can still come back. I sure hope I can though. Guess I have raved enough about why i want to come back already yes? Haha.... the lure of good friends is really hard to resist.

Second... my voice is back! I can talk normally.... hehe... which is good i guess, in the light of certain *ahem* upcoming activities ;-)

Mock comp coming yes.... All the best to every comp team that takes part, be you NC, AC or AA. Mock comp is not easy yeah, and much depends on every person pulling his / her weight. Even more is that you don't panic. Maybe I'm not the one to talk about pressure and panic, since I have never led a competition team before, but to me, the so-called panic factor is very important. Don't panic. Panic = bad. But if you do, then no one will blame you, for it is not unnatural since for many of you it is your first experience in competition. It is the experience that counts. The experience that you gain here, the mistakes that you make here will be what ensures that you don't repeat the mistakes in real life. It may not seem like much, and you may seem to be making the same mistakes again and again, but you all will be learning, yeah?

For several of you, this competition may be harder than for others. Y'all know what I mean. But it can be done. Others have done it before you.... look, i may not be very good at consoling or convincing people... but you all will be able to get through it... you don't have to be the best that others can be. Just the best that you can given the circumstances. Okay? Cheer up 'kay? Its not whether you win, or even if you get last (right, wei lun?) its that you gain experience... that you do your best.

So jia you! Everyone involved, whether you are competitor, marshal or judge! See y'all then =)

Hallo everyone... Dec 25th again... Its as though we spend the whole year waiting for this day and when it comes its like "oh, its christmas". Hope everyone has been having fun... I just ate a lot of stuff and expanded (not unlike my cat, which also expanded).

Christmas... a time for giving, a time for sharing each other's company, to appreciate each other, and to recap our year... An eventful year it has been too, especially for us sec. 4s yes? And also, for us Christians at least, do not let us forget that slightly over 2000 years ago Jesus was born in a little town called Bethlehem somewhere to the east and at a slightly higher latitude relative to us =) Christmas would then be a time for us to thank God for all the things he has brought me, us, through. Remember all the trials that we have gone through from the start of this year: Orientation, Mock Comp, Zone Comp, HP, N-comp, promotion, camp, NDP, prelims, o-levels. Are we not still alive? Still in one piece? Are our friendships not strengthened, new relationships formed? Have we not gained (for SJers at least), 22 new friends? Thank you God! And all the more so for the greatest gift that mankind has received, God's own Son.

So... I wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to follow. May God be with you all, and take care, be you still in Anglican, in St. John, departing to JC, NS etc.

Merry Christmas!

Aaacckk... IIICCckkk.... No.... voice... today. WooWhee... can only talk in beeps whistles and squeals... sort of like an astromech droid from star wars who has learnt a smattering of english. Just ask any family member or St. John member.

Went to school for reporting day today... Everytime I wake up in the morning for these kind of activities I feel like complaining for volunteering for them... although later on I never regret it lar... haha.... Went to school then went to watch the SJers lar. Then today I discovered that in a UG, when you lose your voice you are virtually useless as an instructor lor. Can't shout. Can't even speak like a normal human being. Even when they were doing drill can't bring myself to shout "semula". Cos either they won't hear or they'll think some bird is singing.

Anyway... they did team drill first... then division drill... Wah... *xiang dang nian*... never mind... I just got some anathema against division drill lar... yeah... i dunno leh... Nowadays competition between uniform grps is very high lor, st. john is just no longer THE dominant footdrill expert liao.

Whao, after that played captains' ball... Win 1 lose 1 draw 1, we got 4 pts... hehe... Was reminded that people like Lu Huan and Yu Han are *quite* tall... yeah... can't even guard properly lor... hehe... jump until so short also... but not as bad as in sec. 1 ba... in sec. 1 really see all the balls flying overhead n I can't even get near it...

Following that was lunch... hmmm... lunch arh... I had a gigantic stomach ache... gas in the stomach? I dunno... or dunno what acid doing dunno what thing lar... then I was deciding to go home after lunch, but after going toilet then was better liao, so I stayed for the training. Talk about funny... when i'm judge for FA case I cannot communicate to the First Aiders properly lor... Even during debrief I was squeaking all over the place... hmph, i'm sure the cadets got a good laugh over it=) Kok Keng arh kok keng... he hor... very zhi dong with my water bottle leh... hehe =))

Hmmm... after training supposed to go n play soccer.... then still got orientation, got meeting for *ahem*, all cannot go cos my grandfather's birthday dinner lar... Guess where? Near St. John HQ there lor... the building where the Mr Bean is. Wowee, then we ate a lot of stuff... heheheh, I love green leafy vegetables. Then eat until very full lar, then still cannot control my voice properly, my sister was shaking with laughter listening to me talk.

Yeah lor.... eventful day right? I'm sure the next few days will be equally eventful.... Christmas!

Nothing to do... so i'm gonna update again... about today.

Today. Supposed to go meet wei lun they all for stuff... then. I woke up at 7.30. Severe stomach pain... Delay until 8.10... then by the time I got to school it was 9am... Siao, last time I would have been hung, drawn and quartered, and my squad with me (no disrespect intended to any elders... I wasn't implying anything). Anyway discuss a lot of stuff... then we go do somemore stuff... n somemore stuff... which cannot be said for security reasons... Thats the shortcomings for having a blog...

We saw some of the teams training there.... And i nearly lost my water bottle again (If I had, that would have been 4 water bottles this year liaO!). Then we were talking in the storeroom lor... then saw crystal joyce n boonkai n promptly chased them off... Sorry if i sounded very rude hor... I was kinda tired... and my EQ level not very high... =S Then saw a lady with her pri 6 son i presume... so i, or rather, we, collected our EQ together... and said....

said....

"Hello"

Then... she said

"Hello"

okay. lame. anyway then she asked about the uniform of AHS (not St. John. I initially thought she was talking about St. John). Then she asked about SJ, n asked if I recommended her son to join... I said something like
"Yeah, you get to learn a lot of useful skills, like how to treat people"
"You make a lot of friends... like the people here are mostly seniors that come back to help... so we're like one family"
"But there is some drill and all that, which only can be expected, cos it is a uniform group"

I FORGOT TO TALK ABOUT CCA POINTS! Anyway... after she said thanks n left then wei lun was saying "SOME drill? HALF our things are drill related" or something. I was like "whateverrrr"... hehehehe.... Then getting hungry liao, so went to stadium to find soo yee they all... I was so thin n hungry that I could fit through the bars of the stadium door... between the door and the frame. Hey, I thought only wei lun could do that.

Went to lunch with wei lun and xuan ming... ate fish porridge... so exhorbitant... for Singapore.. when you think of Mt K its already quite cheap lor. Then went back to watch sq 3 orientation performance... Siao... darn tired man... had to rest 3 times on the way up the chang cheng. I think all my climbing stairs-muscles all rot liao... Then reach school liao go toilet... Go toilet then fell asleep inside... What the bleep lor... like that also can... then watch the performance yi xia then pushed off back home...

WHoa... tired... no mood to play computer... just ate stuff... never sleep cos I want to get my sleep cycle back to normal... So i think i'll sleep now... g'night!

~JcZw~ at 8:23 pm

Okay. 2 days after mount kinabalu and i'm still feeling the effects... After coming home on monday i slept until 1 pm, woke up, then slept at 2.30 to 5... whatta waste! Then feeling quite horrible through the whole day... diahorrea yi da dui... then must hang around near the toilet? =P lucky my comp is near the toilet. Then at night also must wake up go toilet one... what the *bleep*... well, it could have been worst i guess... at least i never kena fever, thank God.

Yesterday also feeling weird, then woke up with my right ear blocked... also dunno why. Sleep until the pillow diffuse into my ear lor... nort funny. Anyway then my diahorrea-ic condition improved lar... dunnit go toilet so often liao... but still very slow, reflexes very slow. Then wanted to go fencing at night lor, so i went with my brother... took the lesson from the coach... then really so tired man.... attack, parry, attack blahblah etcetc. But my accuracy kinda improved.

Later on fenced with one feller... i beat him 15-7 the first time we played. This time beat him 15-12 lor... so scary... n i injured him as well, still cannot control so well. Then duelled with another fellow, also younger than me... and got THRASHED 15-5... his defence is sooper good lor, and his counter attack was too fast for me to block, cos i was kinda tired... always kena fake into attack then get killed... but i liked the match lar... the 5 points that i scored were all quite nicely done =) 2 weeks from now then maybe i will be better? i hope so....

Oh yeah... received word that i got into VJC.... haha... so happy... mebbe can join the fencing there tooo!

Day 4: A First Aider, not a doctor
We woke at 7.45 am. Washed up and went to have breakfast. The breakfast was the only meal included in what we had already paid so we could eat without thinking about the cost? Hehe… the food still suan quite okay lar. Then we heard that Amanda had taken ill and was not feeling very well. I didn’t think much about it at the moment, cos according to Miss Loh, Delayed Mountain Sickness was common. Little did I know it would affect me more later.

Allen came and asked us if we wanted to go snorkeling. Originally we had wanted to go rafting, but the journey would have been too long (we would have to take both bus and train to the river!). We took up the offer, changed into shorts, sandals (I had no sandals, so wore shoes with no socks), then walked to the jetty there. Approx 10. 30 am. Took a boat to the island, 20 min boat ride through the scenic green water. When we reached the island arh… the sun shining very bright lor… then saw a lot of fish… the water was very chao clear man… originally they were only going to swim, but then we like paid Rm 7 for the trip, if only swim then like very fei lor. So we hired snorkeling equipment for RM 10 and went into the water.

The water was very shallow, if I stood up in it then it would only reach to my stomach. It was so shallow that I gashed my foot badly on the coral. Nothing much to see also actually, unless we went out deeper, which we didn’t. But we saw sea slugs, sea cucumbers, and generally enjoyed the experience lor. Although once I went too deep and got a mouthful of water through the snorkel. After snorkeling we hung around on the beach lor… talk nonsense… then Allen was trying to scare people by bring sea cucumbers out of the water… hehehehe… We left the island at 3 pm? Yeah. A few people had motion sickness cos they went kayaking in strong current. The return trip wasn’t very good either. Cos there was one point where the boat decelerated because it and 2 other boats were aiming for the same point lar. As the boat decelerated, then 2 huge waves hit us sideways on, causing the boat to rock violently. This contributed to a few more people feeling sick afterwards.

We went back to the hotel to wash up, get rid of all the salt water. Between Alex and Wei Quan they used up all the soap lor. I had to go to the sink to get soap. And I’m like blind without my specs. Then we were slacking around the room lor… watching powerpuff girls… oh man… what an *intelligent* show. Realised that Powerpuff girls have variable-diameter eyeballs. At around 7 ++ we went to Nelly’s room, all the sec. 4s, to have dinner, cos we had bought cup noodles from the supermarket to eat. Oh yeah. We got sunburned. The guys I mean, cos we had removed our shirts at the beach.

Then Vanessa (the “are you alright one”) came in and told us that Amanda was violently sick, and could not retain any food or drink that was given to her. Frankly, honestly, I was at a lost. I, we, so totally dunno how to treat sickness, cos 1. we don’t have medical training 2. We are not allowed to give medicine anyway, even though I had Dramamine in my back pack. Okay. I didn’t know what to do. The teachers not around I think. Everyone was supposed to have gone out for dinner lor. So I did the next best thing. I called my mother. My phone bill hor… is going to be ginormous. But I think my mother would forgive me for that… she also understands the enormity of such a situation? Yeah. Anyway she told me that the most important was to get her to a hospital, or qualified medical personnel. While waiting we could administer glucose water in small amounts, and to stop if she felt uncomfortable. A last resort was to show the Dramamine to a teacher, check for drug allergy, and then give her the tablet, since obviously she would not fit the 5-rights of medication. Don’t usually tell people about my mother, but since they were desperate, I was GETTING desperate, so I did…

Okay. I asked her friends to give the sugar water, and I don’t mind making it known that I was scared out my wits, cos I’ve never been in such a situation before. Dehydration can lead to significant results, and I was praying that she could keep the sugar water down. The netball people were wondering if one sachet of sugar was enough, cos it didn’t taste sweet to them. In the end I said that the concentration didn’ t matter, so long as sugar was administered. Later on my mother told me that it was correct – too sweet water would induce vomiting. She took the water and went back to sleep at 8 pm exactly (I checked my watch). We sat around the room whispering about various stuff… about different kinds of IV drips, about O-levels. They asked me about my Chinese… hehehe….

At 8.18 (I checked my watch again) Ms Loh came back with Allen. They were already arranging to take her to hospital. Boy, was I relieved. They woke her up, and accompanied by one of her friends she went off to hospital. It was through this situation I think, that I recognized 5 new friends.

I quickly gobbled up my cup noodles, which had been absorbing water in the 45 minutes I had been helping to administer treatment, and then we pushed off to the shopping centre to watch Ocean’s Twelve. I was feeling kinda uncomfortable… about Amanda, cos it seemed kinda casual to watch a movie just after all that, even though my brain told me it was perfectly okay… I guess I was wondering if I had only reacted to her problem too late or what lar. Irrational? Rational? I duno. Mebbe I’m just like that lar.

Anyway… the movie was very good… haha… although a lot of the jokes was drowned out cos Mr Yeow was laughing so loudly… hehehehe… I would recommend people to watch the show… its really quite amusing… whoo… laser fields rulez… =) But. A lot of people fell asleep during the show. We had been sleeping late and waking up early for the trip, and most people were tired.

And

Wei quan fell sick. He was radiating heat in the cinema, borrowing my windbreaker to keep himself warm. Must have been horrible for him. Cassandra and Nelly were very worried for him. The casualty toll was still rising. We returned immediately to the hotel after the movie, but he was terribly sick. He immediately went to bed. The others went off to Nelly’s room, which is good… cuts down the risk of infection. They helped me boil hot water though =). I stayed to guard him, but fell asleep soon after. Alex came in later to find both of us asleep. If he had been a burglar both of us would have been killed… Some first aider I am. Almost didn’t do anything in the whole blinking journey.

Slept at around 11 plus guarding Wei Quan.

Day 5: The return leg
Woke at 7.30, so that Wei Quan would have time to prepare and wash up. We were slightly late for breakfast, but then most other people were as well. Amanda was up and feeling better… It was nice to see her active again =). But in turn Nelly was sick. She had eaten noodles too late the night before, and was running fever again. Wei Quan was still zonked. I had messaged my mother to tell them about Amanda’s improved condition. She replied “be careful not to catch anything. Fever is transmitted through physical contact, air and water”. When I read it felt like saying a bad word. I had supported wq on the way back from the cinema. I had slept in an air con room with him. We had shared the same waterbottle. The words “too late” started flashing in my head.

Wei quan and Nelly went back to bed immediately after breakfast. Everyone was beginning to transfer their stuff to our rooms, since only our room, the netball girls’ room and mr chua’s room would still be open after 12 pm. Everyone also suddenly seemed very friendly, calling out “hello” to each other in the corridor =)), and in my case, “are you alright”. I was staying in my room watching the two of them until Allen came back. Read James 5.13-16 from my bible, talking about praying for sick people. So I prayed. That they would be better. That they would be fit for the return journey. That I wouldn’t catch anything.

When Allen came back I went to the Sunday Market with Brynner they all. Saw a lot of things, bought some souvenirs, including a Mt K shirt for wq n me. They were even selling puppies and rabbits there… so cute… hehe… But it was very hot. And our sun burnt backs were beginning to hurt.

We went to have Pizza Hut lunch then pushed off to the shopping centres nearby. We walked around a lot… went to the popular book sale… Brynner’s strength seemed limitless lor… he just kept going n going. Then they kept teasing me about a certain PARTY! Alex, Brynner, could you please enlighten me about this THING? Haha… They went to play PS2 at the shopping centre… then we came back to the hotel. We had bought some cake for Allen who had been sitting in the room patiently with wei quan n nelly. Then we, him, ms loh n the netball girls were sitting outside the room laughing, talking n comparing stuff we had bought.

By this time it was already late in the afternoon. We went to the girls’ room to slack. Brynner wanted to go to the night market, but I n Zhi Yong didn’t want to… cos kinda tired lor. So the two of us went to eat dinner with some of the girls as well as the teachers. Got teased by Aloysius about someone again. *arbish* Nearly threw my bottle at him. So went to eat Bak kut teh again lor.

Then. I began to feel funny. Like, not as active as I should have been. Throat feeling funny, don’t feel like talking much, slight nausea. The teachers didn’t need another casualty. Especially one which was supposed to be a First Aider. There were already at least 5 sick people. So I kept quiet. I wasn’t trying to be pro or what lar… I just thought I could last until I returned home lor. We went back to the hotel room and slacked about more lor. Took more pics. Got teased by Aloysius again. Nearly threw my bottle at him again.

At 9 ++ pm we met at the lobby with all our stuff ready to go home. We kept a close eye on Wei quan n Nelly… Sec. 4s take care of our own ;-) hehe… Took the bus to Kota Kinabalu Airport…We saw the Sabah St. John Headquarters on the way… hehe… SJ rox… then had to wait there a long time for the flight. I tried out the different functions of my digi cam lor. Nothing else to do. I was hoping I wouldn’t throw up on the plane, if the trip was rough.

Through the immigation, we waited at the gate for the flight. I think I fell asleep while waiting. Really feeling weird by that time. The flight came at 11.55 pm. By the time we took off it was 12am exactly, scheduled to reach Senai at 2.20 am. My fears of being nauseous on the plane was unfounded. I fell asleep immediately, so much so that when the Flight Attendant came down the aisle with drinks to sell he had to tap me on the shoulder to tell me to get my big head out of the way.

Reached Senai at 2 am, ahead of schedule. Collected our luggage and headed for the bus. I was feeling really woozy… but when the netball girls asked me “are you alright” in their joking way I would automatically respond “yes yes”… haha… so funny… it would also make me feel slightly better. The bus ride was to the Causeway, not the Second Link, so it was shorter, and it took us through the town of JB, instead through the oil plantations. Went through customs smoothly, and reached back at AHS at 4.10 am. 5 days after we had left. There we exchanged contacts… said good bye…

The trip taught me many things, as well as let me experience many things. Crawling along the narrow ledge in the dark with my friends on mt k was one of the best as well as the craziest things I have done in my life. I made many friends. Friends that I respect and that would be hard to forget. I hope I will be able to remain in contact with them even after graduation. =)

Day 3: To conquer a mountain
Woke up at 1.20. Everyone fairly leapt out of bed cos few people actually slept. Some didn’t though. Altitude sickness had already began to act on the climbers. Some of them would stay behind during the climb. The day before I had headache and stomach ache. Became better though… thanks wei quan for offering the panadol =) Went to wash up, then everyone met downstairs with lightened backpacks (we had removed all our clothes and stuff, bringing just food, water, poncho, windbreaker etc) Brynner was debating whether to wear our Incredibles’ shirt, but at the 8. deg temperature he decided against it… Most people were wearing long sleeved shirts, some with an extra T-shirt over, plus windbreaker. We had our breakfast (Brynner ordered the buffet, then helped all of us get food =P), then we had a final briefing.

Stepping outside into the cold was like getting a slap in the face. Wei quan and I ignited our cyllum sticks (green for me, red for him). There were hundreds of stars in the sky… beautiful sight… As if the whole universe had turned out to watch the climbers depart. Pity we couldn’t take pictures though… Flash caused the stars to fade. Without flash there would just be blackness. We set off along the trail with our headlamps ablaze, on the look out for obstacles.

Altitude sickness soon took its toll though. People began to fall back… Among them was Wei Quan, who asked me to go on first while he caught his breath. Maybe that was stupid of me, especially since he had my water bottle at that point in time, and I should have known that there was a chance he wouldn’t have made it up. The air was really beginning to be thin, our breathing rates were really much faster than they should have been as we tried to take in more oxygen. I soon lost sight of the red light stick that marked the position of Wei Quan.

We continued climbing. Soon we reached the bare rock face that covered the upper quarter of Kinabalu. This time the gradient was steeper than 45 deg. This time there were no handholds. We had to haul ourselves up by a white rope, no mean task in the dark. Congrats to me, when I was on the way up the first aid kit got tangled in the rope, since my left hand wasn’t available to stabilize it. Somehow I managed to pull myself free without damaging anything. Then we edged along a narrow ledge, with a steep drop behind us. Even scarier was the fact that it was dark, and so the drop seemed impossibly long. So we clung on to the rope and moved and prayed that nothing would happen. Alex’s headlamp blew and i had to help him illuminate his path, climbing 5 m then turning back to let him climb 5 m.

At around 3+, a little more than an hour since we started climbing, we reached the Sayat-Sayat Rest Hut. By now I had totally lost sight of Wei Quan (and my water bottle). Natalia and Amanda (from the netball girls) gave me some water, saying that if I didn’t drink now I wouldn’t have much opportunity to drink later on. So nice of them right? Hehe… We continued on our way up. The gradient was more gentle and it was just a matter of placing one foot after another. This time I was climbing with Zhi Yong, Yao Peng and Natalia (Hope I spelt the names correct?) Allen was there as well, helping Natalia along although he later went somewhere else to help other people. I tried eating oreos since I was getting hungry. The biscuits were totally frozen. Had to exert a lot of energy to crack through them. Haha… We stopped from time to time to take pictures, to rest, to drink water. I had to steal water from other people… Thanks Zhi Yong =). Staggering up through the thin air was a very fulfilling experience though. By now our hands were frozen because the rope had been wet and our gloves had been soaked. Some people say that my lips had turned brownish-black. It was due to lack of water, NOT because I had been suffering from frostbite.

We sighted the summit and scrambled up towards it, reaching just after the sun started rising. Mr Yeow and Brynner was already there… fantastic man =) We were joined shortly afterwards by others (Alex, the netball people, the NCC guys etcetc). Took many pics. The scenery was beautiful, indescribable. We were above the clouds, sitting in the sun of dawn, looking down on Sabah. I SMSed my parents telling them I was on top of mt K… hehe… (there actually was reception) My hands moved so slowly lor, it was darn cold. Then, we started our trek down.

Again the weather closed in, the mist swirling around us, visibility dropping. Cassandra from table tennis was hit with a bout of altitude sickness, rendering her dizzy and nauseous. Wen Rong gave her the medicine Dramamine, supposed to fight these two problems. Unfortunately this medicine also made her sleepy, leaving a problem on Allen’s hands as he tried to get her off the mountain in deteriorating conditions. I also got into a stupid accident, when Vanessa (one of the netball girls) asked me if Cassandra was okay. I turned back to answer, but tripped and so slid 2 – 5m down the mountain on my hands and knees, prompting them to yell out “are you alright”, a standing joke between us cos earlier she had fallen down and I had yelled the same thing back to her =). Lucky nothing was injured… One of the NCC guys sprained his ankle on the way… No ice in the FA kit, so I used the salompas spray. Its supposed to help, I guess, although I don’t see the link between it and ice.

Allen was fantastic on the way down, supporting Cassandra with Yao Peng’s help. Natalia also displayed extremely high EQ, talking to her constantly. I’d say that SJers could learn a lot about reassurance from Natalia. I arh… I was quite useless… didn’t go near the casualty for most of the part. Honestly, we’re only taught how to treat injuries not sickness… the only useful thing I did was to take her temperature when we suspected fever. But either the thermometer was not working or it was too cold, cos the temperature registered was 36.5 deg C. No hypothermia though. The whole journey down was not easy, what with a semi conscious casualty and all… not easy for Allen they all, that is. The guide said that they tried to get a helicopter, but by now the clouds had surrounded the mountain, and no aircraft could approach safely. Somehow they got her down the slope, down the ropes by the side of the sheer cliff, and down the mountain to Laban Rata where we had spent the night. She recovered relatively fast there, thank God. I went to wash up and had some HOT noodle soup for lunch (again at an exorbitant price). Then I packed up my stuff, brought it to the dining room, filled my water bottle with warm water and promptly fell asleep in the dining room hugging that lovely hot water bottle… hehe…

I think I woke up ½ hr later, with Allen telling us that it was time to begin the 5 hour descent back to Timpohon gate. I was very gonggong when I left the room, since I just woke up, so I lost track of the sec. 4s. Found myself again with Wen Rong and Natalia. Amanda (who had given me water) joined us later on the way down. It was raining and shining at the same time… the same conditions that had caused so many people to fall sick during NCO course 2002. The rain stopped soon after.

Then at the rest stop where we had lunch the day before, since I was getting warmed up, I decided to remove my windbreaker. I was joking that “watch hor, the moment I take off my coat it will begin to rain”

I took off my coat.

The heavens opened and the rain came down. The three of them looked at me with expressions of amusement and mock horror. I’m not joking. Go and ask them if you don’t believe me, they’ll all be in 4L next year.

So we trudged down in the rain, stopping at each rest stop. Wen Rong gave me chocolate to eat… hehe… It was quite misty and wet, and Allen joined us in our descent. To pass the time Natalia was counting the number of steps from the last third of the trail to Timpohon gate. I think she counted 1100+ steps… haha… I dunno how we managed to climb so high lor. Going down was tiring enough, every step jarring our knees and sometimes the shock transmitted to our brains.

5 hours later we reached Timpohon gate, the second batch of AHS climbers to arrive. We took the bus back to the park HQ first, where we reclaimed the luggage we had left there. Then we waited in the bus for the other people to arrive. We talked about leeches (who had attacked Grace, Cassandra’s friend), penguins (Natalia had a stuffed one), potato chips (which were shared throughout the group) and so on. The remaining climbers arrived soon after and the bus took us back to Kota Kinabalu. We had managed to reach the summit of Mount Kinabalu, Low’s Peak (which was not Low at all), at 4095.2m

Oh yes, I broke my headlamp. It survived a 4095.2m ascent to the peak of Mt K, only to be broken in a 10cm fall in the toilet when I was changing

The bus ride back to Kota Kinabalu was horrendous. It was hot and stuffy, and we could not drink water because the bus jumped about so much. When the feller finally switched on the aircon everyone sighed with relief. As Brynner said, we came extremely close to becoming roasted chickens. We reached the Hotel Shangri-la (3 star, not 5 star, but good enough) at around 7+ We asked Mr Chua (who had rejoined us) whether the cost of the hotel had been more ex than the previous group. He said no, cos we traveled by budget airline. We checked into our rooms (mine was 613, with wei quan and alex). Then we took turns to bathe. After our bath we went out for dinner… went to eat bak kut teh at the coffee shop behind the hotel. Brynner wanted to go eat KFC after that, so we accompanied him there anyway. After that back to our room, where we slacked, and watched HBO (not bad TV services for a 3 star hotel lor), Terminator 3 n Maid in Manhatten… hehe….

We slept at 1 am =)

Wow... just had a very interesting experience... just came back from mount kinabalu, arriving home at 4.30 am this morning... here is an account of our journey to the roof of SE Asia =)

Day 1: Before the mountain
It started just like any other day... met Nelly who lives just down the road... met Wei Quan at simei... then we pushed off to tampines to find Brynner, Alex and Zhi Yong.... Benjamin Cheng was there to help them with their stuff also? We went to buy "The Incredibles" shirt... one each person.... hehe... to wear on the journey... then ate lunch at the TM food court there. After lunch we just went to school by taxi with all our stuff..... back pack.... carrier bag.... first aid kit.... yeah..

In school we changed to our shirts, then hung around and waited lor. Saw the AAs training there. Saw wei lun also... he was telling me not to wear my new shoes.... too bad, my old ones broken liao.... then we boarded the bus and headed for the Second Link... cos to fly to Sabah we were taking AirAsia from Senai Airport in JB... then played games in the bus. We were introduced to our guide.... a fellow called Allen... yeah... he organized everything until very-the thorough. Through customs.... then reached the airport lor.... then must scan our stuff and prepare to check in the luggage... then Mr Chua was filming our "The Incredibles".... wah... hao leng arh... Ate dinner at the airport... the stuff very ex lor.... RM 4.90 for a couple of sandwiches.. so ex! Then we bought donuts... cos its more hua suan (to eat on the plane)... then we went through the gate and were waiting there... then.... hehe... they announced that our flight was gonna be DELAYED for one hour! eeks! So Brynner they all were playing games with the netball girls lar.... then i watched them... cos kinda tired... although it was very amusing to watch.... *who what har*...

Our flight came at 7.25. we boarded. we flew. we landed. okay, not so simple. we forgot to bring stuff to do... so we were bored out of our brains... except for eating donuts lar. The plane was okay I guess… same as other flights except no free drinks or what lar. Anyway we reached Kota Kinabalu in Sabah at erm.... 9.50 ++ pm.... then had to get all the luggage n stuff... took the bus, went to supermarket to buy things to eat for the next day. Then we bought biscuits… spreads… cup noodles… yeah… then we took the bus to Kinabalu Park HQ… wah… now then I know how to appreciate the fact that S’pore has so many streetlights…. It was pitch dark, the journey was 2 hours + long, and you can’t see anything outside except for the bus’s headlamps. Then as we were driving up the mountain the mist closed in and the road was totally obscured lor. Scary. Praying the driver doesn’t drive off a cliff. Then Brynner they all were singing every song they could think of in the back of the bus…. Then they were singing the “12 days of Christmas”…. Wah… funny man…go ask them how they sang… hehe… anyway we reached the HQ at 1 am I think… when I got out of the bus the cold wind hit me in the face… whoa…. Perpetual air-con. The first thing I heard was Natalia saying “who turned on the air-con” or something like that… we went to the hostel and got our briefing for the next day from Allen… then we went to the rooms and got ready to sleep lor... Discovered that the toilet water was errr, yellow!! Slept at 2+… exciting…

Day 2: To climb a mountain
Arise and shine at 6 plus…. So little sleep…. But anyway everyone was very excited lar. Checked n rechecked the first aid kit, making sure everything was still in its waterproof bags. We met in the main hall of the hostel with all our stuff then we took a walk through the morning mist to the park HQ. There we deposited all our unwanted stuff. I retained my backpack n FA kit... Then we went to eat breakfast… the stuff there all so ex, I think I spent most of my money on food for the trip lor. The weather was also beginning to become cold… the mist was all around us and all of us were feeling quite frozen. Maybe we just not used to it?

After breakfast we took a bus to Timpohon gate where we were supposed to start the journey. There we saw the record times of people who had gone up n down the mountain. The record was 2 hours++ lor! My goodness! And we were going to take what, 2 days? Anyway we started the climb. Follow the trail, down the waterfall then climb up n up n up. I’ve never seen so many steps in my life. My goodness, it can kill man, especially when you’re carrying all your stuff. Soon we were hot enough to take off our coats to climb liao. Wei quan they all had the climbing poles lar, so it was kinda helpful for them. Lucky got many rest stops lar, the huts (or pondoks) then we could eat our oreos or muesli bars, drink water etc. I had only 1 bottle of water, but that was enough, thank goodness, I didn’t really fancy drinking untreated mountain water.

Oh yeah, Mr Chua injured himself on the very first step of the trail. Apparently he had been trying to video tape the people walking down the slope and had slipped and fallen on the first step out of the gate, hitting his pelvis quite hard and rendering himself unable to climb. He had to be evacuated to the hospital in Kota Kinabalu. Later on he would rejoin us after we came down from the mountain. The next day when we reached the top of the mountain we discovered the school flag had been with him, so no flag =(. Anyway, the video taping job was done by Mr Yeow instead.

Anyway I think the climb was one of the things that really tested my endurance. Imagine you climb for 7 hours, at an average gradient of 45 deg, and almost every inch of the ground is uneven, and covered with rocks and puddles, and imagine that it is raining for at least 6 of those 7 hours. Add that you have to stabilize a swinging first aid kit with one hand and you roughly get what it was like…. BUT IT WAS VERY FUN! =) Haha… My group was soon lagging behind (Wei Quan, Natalia, Aloysius, Wen Rong), but we made our way up own time own target lor… Saw a lot of nice scenery, especially nearer the top when the vegetation began to thin. Natalia arh… even when the rest of us were tired she still had the capacity to continue talking… haha… she really livened up the climb. Then Wen Rong still had the enery to chiong at the last part when we were getting to the Laban Rata hostel lor.

Reached Laban Rata at around 4.30 pm, approx 7 hours after the climb started at 9.15. We found our rooms (nice warm rooms… actually had HEATER) then we drank hot milo and stuff…. Horrible lor… they charged so much money for food there, RM 11.50 for fried rice, or noodles, RM 0.60 just for a glass of hot water to make milo. Anyway we had our dinner and then had our briefing for the next day, for the summit climb. We bathed at the hostel. Wah! The water was so so so cold lor… like ice water! When I went under the shower I thin my heart stopped beating… in the end buay ta han, so I just used my towel to wipe myself, sort of very drastic tepid sponging in home nursing… sorry, its icy sponging, not tepid sponging.

Went to sleep at around 6pm. The room was very hot n stuffy lor… cos of the heater. So they turned off the heater, but still quite hot. The windows also jammed lor. Lucky I was sleeping near a small window, so I had the best bed in the entire room =))

Woke up at 6.30 Fell asleep at 7.00
Woke up at 8.30 Fell asleep at 10.30
Can’t sleep, too excited… hehe

waha... today going off to mt kinabalu... with the school ppl.... hope everything goes well and no one gets injured? spent 1 1/2 hours waterproofing the FA kit... wasted a lot of plastic? (no lar... not really wasted ^_^) passport... windbreaker... camera.... waterwaterwater.... hehe.... so many stuff to bring lor... cos my parents made me bring... nvm lar... its also good that they insist i guess... rather than i freeze on the mountain... although wei lun said that it SHOULDN'T be that cold lar.... hmmm.... the paper also said what "winds of up to 120km/h if it rains"... whoa! hope it doesn't rain... otherwise we no need see the scenery liao...

Anyway... be back at 1.30am on monday. Please pray that everything goes well (just last year a girl died on mt k? choychoychoy *touch wood*) and that we will be safe. See you all then =)
